#82- Down A Dog At Nathan's

The Coney Island staple's Commack location is a must-eat

Sixty-two hot dogs and 62 buns. That's what San Jose, Calif. native Joey Chestnut consumed two days ago at Nathan's annual Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest to earn his fifth title and the coveted mustard yellow championship belt.

To those who have tasted a famous Nathan's hot dog, the feat is not that surprising. To those who haven't -- what are you waiting for? There's a Nathan's Famous sitting on Commack Road.

Founded in 1916 on Coney Island, Nathan's Famous has grown to a veritable hot dog empire over the past 95 years. Instead of trekking all the way to south Brooklyn to taste their legendary dogs, Commack has its own Nathan's Famous stand, sharing a wall with at 314 Commack Road.

Sitting in the outside seating on a cool summer night, few meals can go fork-to-fork with Nathan's hot dogs, overstretching their buns on both sides and leaving enough room to fill with condiments of your choosing.

A perfect complement to the dogs, Nathan's french fries -- served with miniature forks -- are hefty and delicious chunks of potato. Adding salt to the fries is a must. And as Nathan's Famous is sure to remind you, they have more than just a fantastic hot dog: burgers, cheesesteaks, chicken sandwiches and more are also on the menu. Even the corndog, that iconic dog-on-a-stick meal-on-the-go, makes an appearance.

Nathan's Famous is opened from March through December, so while you do have some time before it's too late to grab a hot dog, the earlier you go, the better. Who knows -- Joey Chestnut could make an unannounced appearance and wipe out the kitchen.
