Burr Student Wishes To Be Mayor of Commack
Fourth grader rallies for a "Commack Day" and outdoor time in campaign letter.
A creative writing assignment turned into a political bid for one Commack student, who used the exercise to discuss what she would do if she could be Mayor of Commack.
Paige, a fourth grader at Burr Intermediate, was told she could write a story on any topic, and she chose to imagine herself as the Commack Mayor, a job she thinks would be "cool."
Paige said she would like to have a "Commack Day" and give kids the chance to vote on the kindness of their teachers. Also on her agenda? The environment.
"I would also have an outside day where every single person in Commack would help clean Commack & enjoy the outside at the same time."
Paige has at least one vote, from her mother Mildred Bernstein.
"I, for one, think this would be a great way to bring our community together. My daughter thought a Saturday in June would be the perfect day to do this," she told Patch.
"Maybe if the community likes this idea, this could be an annual event where a fourth grader can be Mayor each year."
Would you vote for Paige as Mayor for a day? What changes would you make if you could be Mayor of Commack? Tell us in the comments.

If I became mayor for a full (lifetime) term, as I outlined a few months ago (http://commack.patch.com/blog_posts/vote-for-me-for-mayor-of-commack), I would gladly allow one of my loyal subjects the opportunity to rule for a day!

Your mom and I were in 4th grade together. In fact, I'm sitting next to her in our 4th grade picture. (have her show you on facebook.) You look just like she did in 4th grade... Beautiful! Also, I taught 4th grade for 16 years out of my 22 years as an elementary school teacher here in Phoenix, Arizona. Burr was my Junior High School. I grew up in Commack and I cannot think of anyone better to become the Mayor of Commack. Rock On with Your Awesome Self, Miss Paige!
