Lake George: Great for Families and Twentysomethings Alike

Get one last summer vacation in and head to Lake George for a long weekend.

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting Lake George for the first time in my life. I’d have to rate this mini-vacation of mine as just plain fun and relaxing.

For those families out there looking for a fun getaway, there are tons of options available in Lake George that are PG.

The main strip in Lake George, Canada Street, is chock full of nifty little shops; restaurants, eateries, and cafes; ice cream parlors that can make anyone’s mouth drool; and game rooms with every imaginable video game, air hockey, etc.

It’s fun to just walk up and down the street, grab a nice sweet treat, park yourself on one of the many benches, and just people watch.  Just remember if you’re going to walk around at night there to take a light jacket with you – it gets a bit nippy without one.

The “beaches” on Lake George are a favorite by most who visit.  Though I have to say, they are absolutely nothing like the beaches we know and love on Long Island.

Here, our beaches are a bit chillier than mainland; but at the beach in Lake George, there was not a breeze in sight, and I never felt more like a slice of bacon roasting in an oven in my life.

There are also teensy tiny waves at the beaches of Lake George which pale in comparison to those of North Shore beaches - many of you probably know that there are North Shore beaches are virtually wave-less compared to Robert Moses and the like.

You can also take a $10 drive, or hike for free up Prospect Mountain and check out the various scenic viewing checkpoints they have set-up along the way. Whichever way you decide to take, you absolutely must make it to the top. I would also recommend bringing along a nice picnic or snack to enjoy on one of the benches overlooking the lake itself.

If you adults have some free time to yourselves, definitely take a swing by the Adirondack Brewery and the Adirondack Winery located just a couple of blocks away from each other.

The Adirondack Brewery has a tasting sampler which includes six of the brews they offer on tap such as Bear Naked and Dirty Blond, most of which they make themselves just a floor below the bar. They also offer a free tour on Tuesdays, which is really only worth the trip if you happen to be at the brewery already as it is rather informal and lasts about five minutes.

The Adirondack Winery has an equally fabulous tasting offer for their own wines of $5 for 7 one-ounce tastings. The best part about this offer is that you get to pick everything that you try from their full wine list. They even offer dessert wines for your tasting pleasure for an additional two dollars.

So if you’re looking to plan one last hurrah for the summer, go book your hotel, campsite, or cabin, and get ready for a nice relaxing adventure!
