Northport Ford Closes Shop [Empty in Commack]

The car dealership closed suddenly this past week.

The rough economy has claimed another Commack business, as Northport Ford suddenly closed down some time late last week.

The lot is mostly cleared and the lights are out at the dealership, which sold new and used cars and also operated as a service center.

The dealership's website, however, is still in service.

A note posted on the front doors of the building Tuesday read:

"We would like to thank our loyal Northport Ford customers for their patronage over the years. Sadly we must inform you that we are closing our doors. We apologize for any inconvenience."

With Northport Ford gone, that leaves Lee Dodge as the only brand name dealership in Commack.

Are you sad to see Northport Ford go?

mitch, i certainly agree about buying american cars; however, look under the hood or elsewhere on your ford: no doubt you'll see parts made in mexico, canada, perhaps china and other foreign countries. and, your american ford may well have been assembled in mexico or canada sorry, but there's no such thing as a truly AMERICAN car, but i wish there were.

I bought my 2008 Mustang from Northport and had nothing but problems with that dealer. They would not payoff the trade in vehicle that I gave them. I had to pay the two car loans while I waited at in the show room every month waiting for the check. From what the attorney general claims I was not the only one with that problem.
Not sorry to see them leave. Love the car hate the dealership. Wouldn't return to them for service!!!

After my Ford service center in Huntington closed, I went to Northport Ford. I had left Northport Ford back in the 1970's after they treated me badly but I figured I'd give them another chance. I had only had my car serviced there twice without much proble. The strange thing is that I am still getting solicitations from Northport Ford to return for service, the latest one was received yesterday.

as an understatement to say the least, our american economy is in a shambles....a very sad state of affairs. sad to see a long-established business...npt ford...go?, no...just mad as hell! another american business gone...shameful. another business vacancy in commack...outrageous. just where do we carry on from here? a mighty perplexing question which must be addressed immediately, not waiting for the results of this 2012 election year. come on local, state and national legislators, do your respective jobs now. why wait for an american tragedy?

I can say without hesitation that my 2006 Ford Explorer is the best car my wife and I have ever bought; from the aspect of a parent, a guy and the person who pays the note. Having them right in town was a convenience but I'm more worried about how long it will be before someone/anyone buys such a large piece of property.

Here is one family that could not be happier to be rid of a very inconsiderate rude neighbor, with middle of the night deliveries, garbage collectors banging dumpsters waking people out of a sound sleep, employees blasting radios, cursing and honking horns and utter disregard to town ordinances. Good riddance to a bunch of rude inconsiderate people who refused to address reasonable concerns of neighbors who have been living behind the building long before their arrival.

Chef, what model Ford do you drive?
The Ford Motor Co. is doing well, obviously the dealer couldnt satisfy customers or
received an offer for the land/building they couldnt refuse. Time will tell.....

anon....you right about the FMC doing well. in any case, and for whatever reason, npt ford is out of business...another addition to commack's business vacancy problem, and not just small strip mall stores: note pathmark, waldbaums, borders, the former large gas station on jericho & harned...and most of these places remain vacant for extended periods creating unkempt eyesores, surely a blight on commack's image. just look along jericho...even some places that are still in business look like crap displaying unprofessionally created (just spray painted) signs...well, you have the picture. my take on this issue is that it begins with our legislators to start the ball rolling to help keep commack's appearance attractive, each failed business venture is another step backward in this regard. and, by the way, i drive a chevvy bought at another smithtown dealership that went out of business! doesn't the current state of our economy have anything to do with this?

Some of the local buildings that are vacant eyesores should simply be torn down. Give them local tax breaks to do so. We should have smarter developement. The problem for decades has been the belief that more is better and more tax rvenue is better.

Their tax break is given when they tear down the building - Vacant land has cheaper taxes than improved property. A substantial "eyesore tax" should be added to these blighted properties so that it's cheaper to rent it than have it sit empty and decrepit forever.

There is a large Chevy Dealer in Smithtown - the former building is under renovation and a tenant is moving in. There are no empty car dealership buildings on the car dealer zone in Smithtown/St. James. Why doesnt anyone complain about the low class garden apartment complex across from mayfair? The problem in Commack is that it is split between two townships. None of the big box stores are a commack problem - the overzealous retailers overexpanded and didnt provide quality service to attract customers. Waldbaums and Pathmark were just gross....

chef: 100% agree.....other vacant, dilapidated buildings; gas station @ Genesee Dr., Short Stop Printing on Cmk Rd. former lawyer's office/house, Blockbuster, vacant gas station next to Bank of America, vacant gas station/repair shop next to the Commack Car wash, pool supply next to Gasoline Heaven just to name a few. Commack.....we have a problem!

Shame to see them go. Had nothing but good customer service from them when we got our Flex at the end of 2009. They've done right by us on service as well. Keep buying American folks! I would have much rather read about a Kia, Nissan or Honda dealership closing...

dan, i agree with the first half of your response...and to buy american! however, keep in mind that the kia, nissan or honda dealerships are usually run by american salespeople and managers, a catch 22 situation, but certainly a reality. also, i suggest looking into some of the components of your "american ford." i think you'll find that just about the only thing american about it is the name: FORD.

chef - I completely understand your comment about how 'American' my Ford is. And, I agree that many components in it are made outside of the US (including final assembly which occurs in Ontario). However, Ford is an American company that is headquartered in the good ole USA. It's the major conundrum - do you support products that are potentially made in the US by foreign companies (i.e. many Toyotas) to keep our folks working or do you support the US-based company in hopes that, by supporting the company, the other companies will leave, allowing the American companies to bring the jobs back home and expand their workforce here. That drives not only economic growth in terms of employment, but also generates income in tax dollars from increased sales by an American company.

I have no misconceptions that the argument I make is very utopian and not exactly perfect, but I prefer to keep my money in the US once it gets to the top dog. In my mind, investing in American companies (regardless of where their manufacturing may be currently) is a step in the right direction. It's much better than letting your money support foreign governments.

Maybe if American automobile companies got out of Detroit's union stranglehold, they'd be better off...oh, I'm sure that will open a can of worms...

Fix Or Repair Daily = Ford. Not sorry to see the dealership leave town. I would be even more pleased to see that 1970's style building gone. Now for a bit of trivia: what was the name of the prior car dealership that occupied that space?

commack mom, i can understand your dissatisfaction with the "fix or repair" issue concerning a brand: FORD. however, not sure you consider another commack business going belly up, a good happening. as for the 1970's building, don't hold your breath till it's demolished. you'll have to await another developer taking it over and doing what he/she wishes with the existing structure. i see all area business failures as another bad omen for our economy and commack's downward-spiraling image. as for you trivia question, omg, you have me totally stumpped!! ;( HELP! i've been in commack for 48 years...for shame, i don't remember.

I agree with chef - brand loyalty is one thing and I respect it (I'm on the other side and have had nothing but good luck with my Fords), but do you really enjoy seeing another empty building on Jericho Tpke? Commack is going to start looking like a ghetto at this rate.

You won't see these building get razed to reduce their taxes. It costs money to demolish a structure (and is a permit nightmare) the resale value of the property decreases when it's a vacant lot (assuming the building isn't beyond repair) In most cases the owner hopes to sell "as is" or maybe even lease the property to someone who can fix it up without requiring the painful process of a new building permit and possibly rezoning. Looks like we might be stuck with these eyesores for a while.

I know you're right about these issues but there have to be solutions. Maybe we should do like the do with open space purchases. Buy the properties and try to do smarter development. The internet has eliminated the need for much of retail retail space. All of the properties mentioned could be used make adjacent landowners properties better and or improve green spaces, egresses etc. Some communities develop long term plans and use incentives to business and property owners too. It sounds counter intuitive but in the long term its good for business and good for the community... There is no shortage of run down strip malls and store in every crummy neighborhood. We should look at these properties as opportunities. Every one of the properties mentioned have potential.

Commack businesses still taking a major hit? But, but, but Obama said the recession ended 2 years ago. It must be true? Right right? I mean he has brought change and that's supposed to be a good thing. Most people still support him, so he must be doing a good job, and hey the media supports him, so he has to be a great president. Thank you Obama for bringing an end to the recession, that trillion dollars of our money you spent has done wonders. Looking forward to Obamacare now, that should help create more jobs. Thanks again!

Ford Motor Company is enjoying phenominal growth as American cars are doing very well. Other Ford dealers in the area are seeing strong growth over the last year or more. Fords products are quality, selling well and in demand. Northport Ford is gone due to terrible mismanagement, failure to meet financial obligations including not paying off clients trades. Don't blame this one on the economy or Obama. Blame greed and short-sightedness and dishonesty of the owners.

Actually Ford isn't enjoying "phenominal growth" They have simply come back from near death. American car companies are continuing to lose market share (you need to research the facts before you believe the political hype). But sure, no problem we won't blame the 5.9 million American jobs lost on Obama either.

I won't blame our country's greed on Obama or any other politician for that matter. They all stink! Let's just hope another business moves in soon. Back to local issues:

Mike- good ideas but who's going to buy all these vacant bldgs? The state? Then they will have to pay for upkeep and lose the potential tax revenue. Too many people will oppose such a expense just to gain some "green". I for one would prefer to see bldgs. that have been unoccupied for yrs (like the gross gas station next to CMI) get demolished and landscaped. The real problem in Commack is that neither the Town of Huntington or Smithtown cares about Commack. We are at the outskirts of both their prestigious downtown areas. Look how fast Smithtown knocked down the lumber yard on Main Street (see Patch article). Commack is turning into a forgotten run down mess on Jericho Tpke and Commack Rd.

Maybe we can get a Chevy dealership back in Commack in this spot - There used to be one in the boarded up Sushi place across the street from NYSC gym. I've been renting some Chevy's lately like the malibu and Impala and am pleasantly surprised at the styling in and out and the way they drive. That experience made me lease a Chevy Traverse this fall but had to travel pretty far to get to the dealers.

First off, as a lot of you are "sad" to see Northport Ford go. I am one that is not surprised. They were the most corrupt dealer around and as I see much of you don't know the past history of this place. They were investigated and sued by the NYS attorney generals office(Quomo)some years back for "FRAUD" and numerous other crimes against the public by taking in peoples cars and not paying off their leases and loans!!! They screwed tons of peoples credit by doing this to only further their own personal gain. That is why they sold all the property around it, to pay off all outstanding notes and to repair credit profiles. The most recent owners argued over money and again failed to pay outside vendors and pay bills in general. So the reason they left ......they didn't.....The bank swept in and took there stock as collateral repossession and closed there crooked butts down. HAHAHAHA

We purchased several cars from Northport Ford. The last one was a disaster. It was a demo. Shortly after paint peeled off the bumper. We believe it had been in an accident, but they swore this wasn't true. The back passenger door always stuck. In July 2011, the car was just out of the extended warranty, we brought it in for repair, message center notice said "all wheel drive malfunction" $1,700 later, they claim it was repaired. I believe all they did was clean the sensor, as 10 days later the notice came on again, Back it went. This time they did fix the problem, but when I suggested that maybe it didn't need a $1,700 repair, the service writer insisted that it was an ADDITIONAL problem, but for Customer Satisfaction, they were not charging me for this repair. I asked for the paperwork for the repair, but was told since there was no charge, there was no paperwork .I became suspicious and called Ford in Detroit and filed a complaint. After a couple of months when they didn't contact me, I called again and was told they didn't have to notify me of the results! They had contacted Northport Ford and were told the 1st repair was for Traction Control and the 2nd repair was warranty work on brakes they had replaced in April 2011. This was totally untrue, but without paperwork I couldn't prove it. So I WILL NOT purchase another Ford. I was disappointed with Northport Ford and disappointed with Ford Corporation's treatment of my complaint.

Carl... I dealt with Northport ford and every time there was problems also and this was since they were in the old location where CVS now stands(down near Daly Rd.) why I kept giving them another chance maybe due to there close location to my home for warranty work. I can tell stories from first hand to third party and their all the same nightmare problems of how they tried and/or succeeded in taking advantage of people and not doing what they stated was performed. I did buy two vehicles from them, but as long as you are a wise shopper and stick to your guns ,you'll be OK with any dealership, that is until the finance guy gets a hold of you!! LOL

Problem is we have a recall now and we don't trust Syosset Ford to do the work because they tried to scam us with a fake repair awhile back. Can anybody recommend a Ford Dealership that is semi-honest? BTW - Ford Motor Corp. does not even know Northport Ford is officially closed!

Just brought a new 2011 ford Platinum F150 in December of 2011- was just calling today to make my first appointment for service and to change out a defective part and low and behold found out they were closed. So far the truck has been great - i was looking to buy the extended warranty, however i guess i can get that from another dealership. Wondering if another dealer will cover the defective sifter handle ? to be continued. . . does anyone know where the sales reps all went, i am sure to some other dealerships...

JOHN GRUBER,
comparing commack to the south bronx is like comparing a monkey with a giraffe insofar as its becoming a ghetto. how about this progression?..... commack is getting to look crummier and crummier (especial along jericho tpk.) as business after business close and remain vacant and unkempt. those of us who use the word "ghetto" are probably emphasizing the fact that jericho tpk., commack's Main Street, is on a downward trend concerning appearance and ambiance. in the vernacular, it sucks, but it's also far from appearing like the south bronx.

Spent hours completing paperwork and providing info for a loan and was completely ready to drive home with it when the manager comes in and tells me the salesgirl made a mistake and it's sold. But he does have others. I couldn't get out of there fast enough I bought my new beautiful mustang out of state.
