This Week at Commack Library

A guide to the activities happening at your local library.

If you have a taste for the macabre, come by the on Monday to see Tom Philbin, author of I Monster: Serial Killers in Their Own Chilling Words, who will speak about the psychology of serial killers, as well as local serial killers from Long Island.  Here are other events happening this week at your library:

Monday, Feb. 28

Dancercize/Toning
Time: 4:15 p.m. – 5:15 p.m.
Description: Sign up for this class that meets twice a week and includes low-impact dance and toning exercises. Be sure to wear comfortable exercise attire and bring a towel, mat, water, and dumbbell weights.
Location: Community Room

What Makes Serial Killers Tick?
Time: 7:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Description: Tom Philbin, author of I Monster: Serial Killers in Their Own Chilling Words, will speak about how serial killers have into public consciousness in the last forty years.  He will also discuss how serial killers become killers, what drives them, what separates them from ordinary murderers and how to recognize the work of a serial killer.  Philbin will also shed light on some of the most famous serial killers from Long Island, including Richard Angelo (the “Angel of Death”), Joel Rifkin, and Rudolph Hoff.

Great Books Reading and Discussion Group
Time: 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.
Description: This book group meets on the first Tuesday of every month, and will be discussing selected poems by Wislawa Szymborska.  The books for every Great Books meeting can be found at the Circulation Desk.

Thursday Afternoon at the Movies
Time: 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Description:  Stop by the library on Thursday afternoons to catch a viewing of newly released movies.  This week, see Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps, starring Michael Douglas as Gordan Gekko, a merciless financial executive who just got out of prison and looks to forge an alliance with his daughter’s fiancée, a young trader named Jake (played by Shia LaBeouf).

Friday, March 4

Are You Game?
Time: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
Description: Join friends and neighbors every Friday for an afternoon game of bridge or mahjong.
