Loren all I can say is you constantly make me proud. Your Mom.
Anthony Zumpano October 28, 2011 at 05:35 pm
I'm not your mom, but I enjoyed the article anyway!

To the nay sayers, the cynical ones above...the males that wrote....I feel sorry for you...Kids readRead More more than we think, they listen more than we think and even if they don't acknowledge it they are happy to know we care. I just left my one and only at college and your writing is wonderful Loren. I hope to send it to her and even if she gets 2 things out of it I'll be happy. Thank you for a beautifully written piece.

I sent mine off with a memory jar...sounds corny but it helped me get through it. They partied withRead More the best of them but I know for sure that they read and enjoyed and laughed and cried while reading some of the memories I had written. This letter might not even be appreciated til they have kids of their own but don't think for a minute that it wont be appreciated. You have your priorities and heart in the right place.

Henry, I beg to differ. Maybe you had a bad experience with your own children or you can't relateRead More like mothers do, but I know for a fact that the kids do take to heart what this letter says. It may not be apparent immediately, but they store it away and use it when they really need it. While there is always exception to the rule, MOST kids will appreciate what this letter is saying if you've raise them right.

WOW! I heard about this thread, and I am just getting to it today. Laine Fried's 5:46pm on Monday,Read More June 27, 2011 post threatening legal action is an absolute J-O-K-E. Linda Klancer Campione's 3:29pm on Monday, June 27, 2011 post saying there has been 1 person in 8 years who has attended a board meeting might be true, but 1--how and why is that possible? 2--I know the one person that did attempt to attend a board meeting this year and I know what happened at that meeting. The board kicked him out, and in a not-so-nice way. They didn't want his help or his suggestions. He was stepping up to donate his time as you all ask us to do instead of complain, and you told him to get lost. That wasn’t the first time he was told that either. You people (the board) do a decent job. 1000 kids are not easy to manage, field maintenance, injury reports, umpires, and whatever else you want to be patted on the tush for are all well and good, and thank you for your efforts.

Unfortunately for you there are a LOT of people who have their opinion on how you run things whetherRead More you feel they are valid or not, and they are certainly entitled to it. As far as 'stacked' teams in both travel and town--If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, well it likely is a duck. Allowing a manager to be paired with an assistant coach who both have 'A' player kids year in and year out might be construed as 'stacking'. Preferential field assignments for certain teams while others are constantly assigned to Cedar Rd Rear could be misinterpreted as well or is it just the ‘luck of the draw’. I was at 1 of the parent's meeting for the travel team tryouts this spring, not the one where all heck broke loose about the way tryouts are run, and 1 of your coaches/coordinators or just some guy sitting in the 1st row ranted for 5 minutes in such a defensive tone about how he's sick of hearing about the way the teams are chosen ….quack quack.

The president made it very clear that night in between all the board members waxing poetic aboutRead More their on field accomplishments that the 'A' team is there to WIN not to have fun. The 'B' and 'C' teams—thanks for your donation and fend for yourselves. Have fun as you try to have fun and find anybody that can throw a strike and not walk the ballpark for 3 hours because every pitcher is on the elite ‘A’ team. Oh by the way, how many of your 'accomplishments' have won your ‘A’ teams championships, earned those 9-12 year olds contract extensions, new cars, signing bonuses, or college educations? Did the kids have fun? How do the kids feel after they lose a/the “big game” that you’ve been telling them they “have to win”? In conclusion, where does all the money go? $150 x 1000= $150,000. Part of it should go to a coach’s clinic. That’s what USA Hockey does. Who cares if you volunteer your time if all you care about is winning, your kid playing SS, batting 3rd, and you have no idea how to throw or catch a ball yourself let alone teach the kids how to, or teach them any fundamental aspect of the game?

My plans are simple, drive or walk to our community pool. Enjoy conversation with friends andRead More neighbors. Sounds boring doesn't it and many times it is, but the days when I was 18 - 20 and enjoyed the beach with my boyfriend Eddie and the times I spent all day at Asharoken Beach in Northport with my kids and friends are long gone and will never return. Young people, enjoy whatever it is you enjoy and make all the memories you can.

Alone...me and my chair. Possibly some music, but that is not a necessity. Definitely a book, justRead More in case I get in the mood to read. A small cooler with some ice water, a diet coke and some very cold fruit. That's it....that's all I need. The sounds...the fragrance...the breeze.....my heaven :)

My wife and I love XU's foot spa. I actually just bought 5 gift certificates for various familyRead More members. It is very relaxing and totally worth the $28. I actually think you get a better massage here than Massage Envy or Hand and Stone! Different feel because you are clothed but same end result- stress relief!!

Did they close? Looks shutdown as of this weekend? I really hope not

Dominick, I passed by there today (Wednesday) and their "open" sign was lit up, so IRead More ventured inside to confirm. They are indeed still open.

Maureen, I agree unsafe working habits and unsafe environments would be a terrible thing but thatRead More is why we have OSHA these days, which runs independently of unions. (Certainly back in the day when some working conditions were horrendous I understand the need for unions. I don't think the Commack teachers are physically threatened by their working conditions.) You are right tenure is obsolete. I have a niece who is in graduate school to be a teacher and if she gets a job teaching she will be paid more than the average joe who has just graduated not to mention where her salary will go in say six years teaching. There are no starving teachers that I know of, at the very least they are pulling in 70,000 and have benefits and pension plans that would blow you mind. I don't know about you but when I had children my husband did not qualify for paternity leave - he would have if he was a teacher! I liked your geometry as a sport comment! I have always said that if parents gave their children a microscope instead of a baseball bat when they were little, and scientist were paid like baseball players we would have found a cure for cancer years ago.

I am all for unions. Companies and people with power will always take advantage of the lowerRead More classes. Just look through out history. Who built the railroads, who is making your clothes now? How much are you paying and how much are they getting paid? There is no silver bullet that will work on whats wrong with the system. We have to believe in each other and step up and do the things that is best for most of us. Unions have helped us do that. What is 70,000 a year now anyway? yes we can eat with it, maybe go up to the catskills on vacation. I can go on and on just follow the money to the power and thats who is running our system and they give us the money to pay Lipa. They have to change not us. Tony

I absolutely LOVE all these comments. I'm excited to see a healthy exchange of ideas and thoughts.Read More Would love to hear from people on the other side of the budget vote as well. Any teachers of school administrators who would like to weigh in?

Denise- LOREN, You are awesome and i feel your pain. In a visit to a gyno- Doc.,(male) a few yearsRead More back, he explained to me that menopause is when you have not gotten your monthly period for an entire year. So, this means they call it "PERI" , (they means God and men) so that when you are loosing your mind and experiencing all of the blood,(not literal) sweat,(very literal) and tears,- EVERY DAY FOR MONTHS AND MONTHS - you think this is the worst of it. There is nothing peri-or small to this change in my life and there is certainly NO pause. Perhaps we should think of a better name for it. Any suggestions?

Loren, I thoroughly enjoyed your article. So well written and funny! You do such a wonderful job!Read More Unfortunately, I understand all that you wrote! Ugh!! Well done, my friend! Keep up the good work!

Hey Denise! There's something to be said about misery enjoying company though, isn't there? It'sRead More nice to know all "my people" are going through it with me, but it doesn't suck any less. Hmm...a better name? Even I'm stumped at that one! Anyone have any ideas??? I'd love to hear them!
