Here's what you need to know about today's remembrance event:
- A candlelight ceremony will be held at the Heroes Memorial Track at the Commack High School football field at 6:30 p.m. The district will also recognize First Responders for their continued commitment in serving their communities.
- Honorary guest speakers include Congressman Steve Israel and Sen. John Flanagan.
- The Commack School District completed its 9/11 Memorial last year, which was unveiled during the 2012 ceremony. The district received a piece of steel from the fallen World Trade Center. Commack is one of a few districts to receive a piece of World Trade Center steel. More often pieces have gone to township or counties for memorials. The memorial features the names of Commack residents and district alumni who perished in the attacks.
- The memorial was slightly damaged during Hurricane Sandy, in which a soccer goal came up over the fence and broke a marble bench. The memorial has since been repaired.
