Bellone Congratulates Commack Students for Work on Inventions

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone congratulated student inventors from Commack High School who be recognized Tuesday at a meeting of the Suffolk Inventors and Entrepreneurs Club.

“It is critical to our future economic success that we harness the creativity of our youth and get them involved in the inventing process,” the County Executive said. “These students represent the ‘farm team’ of Suffolk County’s Innovation Economy, and I look forward to seeing how they will leverage this experience as young adults and future entrepreneurs.”

The theme of the meeting is “Planting the Seeds of Innovation” and will feature the students and their teacher, Richard Kurtz. The students have participated in an inventing course and will present their products at the meeting, scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Media Room of the H. Lee Dennison Building, 100 Veterans Highway, Hauppauge.

Kurtz has been a high school educator for 27 years.  He teaches at Commack High School mentoring and engaging students in hands-on projects in a research course in science and engineering.  The students are encouraged to find their passion in science by independently questioning existing scientific questions and delving into problem solving.

Kurtz and club founder and founder Brian Fried worked together to develop a course for students to go through the inventing process.  This past school year students brainstormed ideas, developed possible solutions, and constructed prototypes.

Fried said, “The course led to the development of new skills in thinking, writing and presentation. The experience has been rewarding for all involved and I look forward to mentoring the students from Commack High School.”

Each month there is an opportunity for everyone to introduce themselves and their invention or business idea, a speaker and time to network.
