The Most Important Issue Facing Commack Residents RIGHT NOW

What stores are going to appear in the former Pathmark and Borders locations?

As you are well aware, there are many troubling events in the news today:

  • People are arguing over whether releasing the photo of Osama bin Laden's bullet-riddled corpse will stir more outrage in the Middle East than, say, releasing his prom photo
  • It is now cheaper to fill my car's gas tank with Johnny Walker Blue than with Shell Premium
  • Between all the tsunamis and the tornados, we will probably have to prepare for a plague of locusts this summer

But if you live in Commack, there's an even more pressing concern:

What makes Commack great is the fact that we have a little of almost everything. Heck, we even have two Target stores. But there are a few additional things that would enhance the neighborhood. Here's what I'd like to see:

  • Five Guys. I already head over to the locations in Huntington and Hauppague, but we could use one a bit closer.
  • Sonic. They've been running commercials on our cable stations for years, and they finally open up only one, on Deer Park Avenue. And the wait is something like thirty hours for a shake.
  • Cheesecake Factory. That way, while I'm waiting for a table, I can rush home and mow the lawn.

Notice I didn't suggest anything like a museum or a cultural center. I won't complain if either of those show up, especially if they serve waffle fries.

Here's what Commack doesn't need:

  • Another nail salon. When I was at college and would return home on break, the only evolution I'd notice in my humble town was yet another strip-mall manicure emporium. Then again, I bite my nails, so I'm biased.
  • Target. We already have two. Let's share the wealth.
  • Some bank that no one's heard of.  I don't have a problem with competition, and my big-name bank is probably nickel-and-diming me into early foreclosure. But I think we have enough First Republic Federal Johnson Banking Service Institutions or whatever the next bank du jour will be called.

Have you got any ideas? What would you like to see? Just don't be too disappointed if your dreams for the old Borders and Pathmark buildings don't come true.

After all, there's always the vacant Charlie Brown's. And the vacant Blockbuster. And the vacant...
