Commack Girl Creates Birthday Fundraiser for Kids with Down Syndrome

Meghan Schaefer, 12, raises $1,248 for the Association for Children with Down Syndrome.

A sixth grade student at Commack Middle School celebrated her birthday last month by helping other children who like her, live with Down syndrome.

According to a Newsday report, Meghan Schaefer created a fundraiser for the Association for Children with Down Syndrome in Plainview. Instead of receiving gifts on her birthday, Schaefer asked family and friends to donate $12 to the organization, which helps kids children with Down syndrome and other developmental disabilities, in honor of her turning 12 on Dec. 12, 2012.

Schaefer set out to raise $1,212 to match her special 12-12-12 birth date. Not only did she meet her goal, but she beat it by $36.
