Creating Wellness in Commack

A chiropractic practice that specializes in treating the whole body through the spine.

Dr. Matthew Lewis and Dr.David Pollack of Creating Wellness Center of Commack are two of the few doctors in the world that practice Loomis techniques. These chiropractors work on the spine with traditional methods, but also treat the rest of the body with enzyme replacement therapies.

Pollack said these techniques rely on three factors – external stress, physical problems and chemical stress. These three stresses make up the map of the body's physical problems – back pain, headaches, heart burn, weight gain, etc. All, Pollack said, are evaluated to treat an individual.

Pollack said external stress and how you manage it is where the treatments at the center begin. Then they evaluate any physical problems you may have had during your lifetime, such as injuries, surgeries and traumas. And then the chemical stresses on your body are evaluated – Pollack said we are surrounded by toxins and continually put toxins into our body through the food we eat. Nutrition, Pollack said, is where treating the body begins.

Many times the center is a last resort for patients who have been to numerous specialists and are still unsatisfied with their results. Loomis allows the doctor to view the whole body in order to determine what exactly is causing the pain – and it doesn't always have to be the place where the pain is. For example, you could have back pain because of a stomach or kidney problem, Pollack said.

"Being healthy is not an event, being healthy is a process," he said.

They advise clients from age 4 to those in their 80s, and treat everything from the spine to digestion issues. Pollack said they also act as patient advocates – referring patients to specialists when necessary and helping patients learn what certain tests mean and what tests should be administered.

Pollack said business has changed since the recession, many more clients ask about insurance and the practice has started accepting out of network providers.

Weight loss is also a part of the wellness treatments available at the center. Their infrared saunas, detox foot soaks and meal plans help clients retrain their bodies to process the nutrition in a way that works for them, Pollack said. Diets are altered based on the person and their needs, not simply because a particular substance is good.

"Fish oil is good, but for some people it is not. It can harm someone with gallbladder issues, and yet many people take it because of all the literature that says it is healthy for you. That's an example of a diet that doesn't work for everyone," Pollack said.

The center is open Mon. – Thurs. from 9:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and then from 3 p.m. – 7 p.m. They also hold occasional Friday and Saturday hours on an as needed basis. You can view their website for more information.
