Be Wary of How You Eat on the Run

Smart choices at fast food joints allow you to stay on track with your diet, nutritionist said.

In today's fast-paced society, we tend to eat "on the fly" by grabbing anything to go, or finding ourselves starving while watching our children dive happily into a Happy Meal.

You're thinking: aren't fast foods bad if you are trying to get in shape? Well, the answer is no, as long as you choose wisely. The rules for eating in fast food restaurants are:

  • Refrain from eating french fries or other obviously fatty choices.
  • Fill up on water. Try to drink approximately 8 to 16 ounces of water while eating. If you find that the temptation is getting the best of you just remember: nothing in the world tastes as good as being healthy feels. You are in control. You control what goes in your mouth . Food should not rule your life.
  • Salads are always a good option since they provide fiber and fill you up. Try to avoid salad pitfalls: sugary raisins, craisins, creamy dressings, fried croutons, oriental crisps and most cheeses.
  • Try to combine a serving of low fat protein (such as grilled chicken or turkey) with a small serving of carbs. If you choose a grilled chicken sandwich, the bread will count as the carbs.

So now that you know the rules for eating fast food, let's choose some healthier options at some local food chains:

Subway – roast turkey, veggie, or a roast beef subs are good choices but make sure yours is the 6 inch size and refrain from adding mayonnaise or heavy oils!

So there you have it . You can walk into any fast food restaurant with the knowledge to make healthy selection. Use it!
