Frugal Family: Spring Out and About with Local Deals

What did you do this weekend? Did your kids have some fun at carnival? Did your family cheer for the volunteer firefighters in the Kings Park ? Saturday’s weather surely hinted that the end of winter is here. Spring is in the air, so get out and enjoy what our area has to offer.  A family meal celebrating  St. Patrick’s Day or some movie time together can be had on the cheap this week.  Our picks also help you plan for the seasons ahead.

1.  Kid Toons at National Amusement Movie Theaters

Deal:  The cost is $3.50 per ticket.  Kids get a concession coupon, which includes a small popcorn, fountain drink and select candy snack for only $3.50 more.  A story is read to the children afterward, and they are offered pizza.

When:  Island 16 Cinema de Lux, Holtsville.  Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13 at noon.

2.  Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner at St. James United Methodist Church

Deal:  Irish food, dancing and music just in time for St. Patty’s Day.  Adults $12, Seniors, $10, Children $6 and kids under 3 are free.

3.  Wine and Cocktail Tasting at

Deal:  It’s always better to try before you buy.  Sample some spirits for free before purchasing a bottle.

When:  Friday, March 11 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. is “Best Sellers.”  Saturday, March 12 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. is “Cocktails with Chambord and Chambord Vodka.”

4.  Suffolk Camp Fair at Smith Haven Mall

Deal:  The break from the snow reminds us summer is not that far away.  Spend an afternoon gathering info with your kids.  They’ll have fun helping to make decisions, and it’s free.

When: Saturday, March 12 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

5.  Nursery School Fair at The Brush Barn

Deal: Get free information regarding the nursery schools in the Smithtown area.

When:  Wednesday, March 9 from 10 a.m. until noon.
