Get Fit: Sunken Meadow Provides a Free Gym for Locals

Using the benches, rails, steps and boardwalk, residents can get a full body workout at Sunken Meadow.

Joanne Azoulay, personal trainer and columnist for Commack Patch, demonstrates the ways in which locals can use Sunken Meadow State Park as their workout hot spot year round.

These workouts are designed for anyone looking to say money on gym memberships – which Azoulay said can run from $30 to $40 per month – or anyone unable to take too much time out of their day. These workouts can be incorporated into playground visits with your children and walks with your dog.

Azoulay said the recommended physical activity level for adults is now 50 minutes most days of the week, or 150 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

She said working out at Sunken Meadow can help you with cardio and strength training, but also said that you should be aware of your own limitations and start out slowly, with limited reps of each exercise.

Editor's Note: Before beginning this or any workout routine, it is important to check with your primary care physician.
