A kettlebell, or Girya, is an ancient strength building tool, originating in Russia. It's resurgence in the U.S. is credited to Pavel Tsatsouline and Valerie Federou.
Kettlebells can be used safely with a diverse group of practitioners and like a dumbbell or barbell, the kettlebell is an excellent tool to have in your exercise repartorie.
Kettlebells are measured in kilograms, pounds and poods (1 pood equals 16kg or just over 35lbs). Ideal starting weights for men are 16kg or 20 kg( 35 or 45 pounds) and for women 4kg or 9kg ( 9 or 18 lbs) .

Kettlebells have been shown to improve strength and power, develop,and enhance fat loss , increase grip strength and support basic cardio exercise. Some of the basic moves used by kettlebell practitioners are swings, snatches and cleans.
Joanne Azoulay is licensed by the American and International Fitness Associations as a personal fitness trainer, aerobic instructor and in sports nutrition. She is also a second-degree black belt in Shotokan karate and is certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and defibrillation. She is a personal trainer and offers private sessions.
