Get Out: Kids Fun, Ballet, And Irish Night

Here are some ideas for a fun weekend, courtesy of Patch.

It’s Thursday, and you’ve got no idea what you’ll do for the weekend.

Why Go: Children ages 3-5 are invited (with their parent or caregiver) to, well, discover bugs, trees, plants and everything else we see in nature.

Why Go: Badminton is a great weekend barbecue sport, just make sure you're not playing against the girls from the Commack High School team. Watch the ladies battle Miller Place High School.

Why Go: This program, specially designed for newborns through 34-month-olds, will teach the elements of song, how to put on a finger play and fun rhyming.

Why Go: Whether you're new to the story of of Adelaide, Nathan and co. or you've seen it unfold a dozen times, Guys And Dolls never fails to entertain.

Why Go: Friday is "Drop Everything And Read Day" and what better way to do that than by 1) Dropping everything, and 2) Reading? The Smithtown Library will host a one-hour storytime for kids of all ages.

Why Go: With fun lighting, music, prizes and crazy bowling challenges, this ain't your grandparents' bowling.

Where/When: ; Saturday, 8 p.m.
Why Go: Few forms of art, if any, are as graceful and elegant as ballet. The Russian National Ballet will be bringing two performances to the Staller Center: Chopiniana, also known as Les Sylphides, and Shakespeare Tragedy, which you may have heard of by its other name, Romeo And Juliet.

Where/When: ; Saturday, 5-7 p.m.
Why Go: With Cady Finlayson on guitar and percussion and Barbara Novick reciting poetry, this night at the Violin Shop is sure to be one not to miss. An open mic follows the two performances.

Where/When: Walt Whitman Birthplace State Historic Site And Interpretive Center; Saturday, 1 p.m.
Why Go: If you're a child over the age of 8, celebrate Poetry Month at this workshop titled Poetry And Lilacs. Attendees will make a replica of Whitman's house, complete with Spring-themed poems.
Pricing: $9.75 per child


Where/When: ; Saturday, 1-4 p.m.
Why Go: To some children, the definition of exercise is playing the Wii and a healthy food is a cheeseburger. Keep your kids brushed up on all they need to know about good health at Healthy Kids Day at Huntington's YMCA. There will be a rock wall, petting zoo, zumba for the family and lots more.
