Good News: Student Leads Walk-a-Thon To Fight Cancer

Hauppauge 5th Grader Leads Walk-a-Thon to Fight Cancer

Caroline O’Brien, a student, a fifth grade student at Bretton Woods Elementary School in Hauppauge, wanted to do something special to honor the memory of her beloved grandparents that she lost to cancer.

With the assistance of Bretton Woods Principal George Gagliardi, Caroline spent most of the school year planning and organizing a school-wide cancer awareness fundraiser.

Each elementary school class wore different color clothing, representing six different types of cancer, to participate in the school-wide walk-a-thon, which raised $1,400 for the American Cancer Society.
Kings Park Senior Named to Softball All-New York State Second Team

Kings Park High School rising senior Paige Julich was recently named to the All-New York State Second Team for Softball for the 2013 season.

The award is given annually by the NYS Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports. Julich is a two-time All-County Player and was named the 2013 Suffolk County League V Player of the Year this past season.


Scholar Athlete, Musician Studying Engineering at SBU

Headed to Stony Brook University in the fall, Nathaniel D’Agati was on the high honor roll for every quarter of his four years at Miller Place High School, earning the Award for General Academic Excellence each year, as well as the President's Award for Academic Excellence as a senior. He challenged himself with seven Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses and was a member of the National Honor Society, the Foreign Language Honor Society and the Service Club.

He was the recipient of the ASSET Scholarship, the Italian American Academic Scholarship, the Edmund S. Kos Memorial Scholarship and the Arlette Conklin Memorial Scholarship. He will be majoring in electrical engineering at Stony Brook University in their Scholars Program and was the recipient of the university's Dean's Scholarship.
