Great Escape: Time To Get Crafty

Break out your art supplies for something other than a school project.

Arts and crafts aren’t only for kids; Everyone has some righ- brain tendencies, and that kind of thinking can be fun and relaxing,and gives the other half of the brain a much-needed break.

With sites like etsy.com, many local home crafters are even selling their handmade wares. is the epicenter of crafting here in Commack.  There, can go and buy an all-inclusive kit for scrapbooking baby memories or a set of quirky cross-stitch patterns for some at-home crafty time.

Another option is signing up for a class. Some, like cake decorating or acrylic painting, require registration and run weekly.  The Wilton Cake Decorating Courses start next week,  on April 3. Become the superstar at your daughter’s next birthday by learning how to manipulate polka dots and flowers out of gum paste and fondant.

Other in-store demonstrations are given sporadically, and are often inexpensive or free.

Working with your hands can be librating even if you consider yourself uncrafty.  Don’t despair if you’re at a lost for a starting point.  The Michael's website is actually quite comprehensive.  The project idea section can be searched by craft category, craft duration or by supply brand.  The Food Network’s Duff Goldman and the queen of craft Martha Stewart both have popular lines. Visual learners can enjoy the video links on the site--think of it as a personal craft tutor.

Working on a project together can be a worthwhile way to bond with your children, but making something on your own can be a great escape.  Your satisfaction will be re-ignited each time you sport the bracelet you made or a friend thanks you for the personal card you created.
