Ivy League Day Camp Hosts Cabin Fever Weekend

Open house offers a glimpse of Summer during the cold Winter months.

While the mountain of snow that is dumped in the area each week (OK, we may be exagerrating a little) makes it feel as though Summer will never come, there was a small sign of hope on Saturday as hosted Cabin Fever Weekend, an open house/camp preview.

Although its season doesn't officially start until June 27, the 16-acre camp, which is based in Smithtown, invited parents and youngsters to have some fun and see what great activities lie ahead for them in the Summer. Owners Noah and Margaret Cooper proudly showed potential campgoers and their parents just how much there is to look forward to at this prestigious establishment, which offers many programs and activities for children ages 3 to 15.

Upon arriving at the open house, guests signed in at the gym and were greeted by face painting, a DJ, an inflatable playstation and delicious s'mores. The indoor festivities not only gave children a reprieve from being stuck inside the house these past few weeks, but also a hint of the fun that lies ahead for them in the Summer.

And while Assistant Director Meredith Stern had her work cut out for her, having to sell the idea of summer camp to prospective parents on a frigid day with snow on the ground, she did an excellent job making the camp seem warm and friendly. Stern guided parents through the Go Kart track, one of the camp's biggest attractions, and the Explore Center, where children kept themselves entertained with crafts.

The tour also previewed some traditional summer camp activities, like swimming, bike riding and basketball, and some not-so-traditional activities such as pony riding, a petting zoo and mini golf.

With a preview like this, Ivy League Day Camp is geared to make their 50th year in business the best one yet...we only have to brave the cold for a few more months.
