Community Corner

Jan. 2 is Hiking, Football, and Girls Track

Support the Cougars, or just relax and watch the game on this first Sunday of 2011.

One great event for families today is in Cold Spring Harbor, where you can take the kids to the Whaling Museum and learn about ice and how to make ice cream. Also, there are plenty of activities for you to get social and spend more time with friends and family.

1.      :  Pack some drinks and snacks and head out on a five mile hike from Nissequogue River State Park to Smithtown Landing and back.  The hike starts at 10:15 a.m, and has free admission.

2.      :  Watch the game with friends, food, and drinks at the Blacksmith Tavern in Smithtown, which offers 25 cent wings and half off appetizers during the games.

3.      Varsity Girls Winter Track:  Cheer on the Cougars at the Suffolk Community College West Campus in Brentwood, bright and early at 9 a.m.

4.      Ocean Science Sunday:  Bring the kids to the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum for the Festival of Ice at 1 p.m. or 3 p.m. to learn about ice and do an icy science experiment, paint with colored ice, and even learn how to make ice cream with melted ice.  Tickets are $3 for members, and $8 for non-members.

5.      Go out to dinner:  Use the Commack Patch Food & Dining Directory to find someplace new to eat nearby. You can even search by category of eatery, so you can find anything from coffee shops to fish and seafood shops.
