Also this week, a Smithtown native returned to work after conquering cancer for the second time.

A group of parents and employees spoke up on Tuesday to protest the proposed closure of the Sagamore Children's Psychiatric Center in Dix Hills, a move which would shutter inpatient services at the facility and merge them with programs in Queens and the Bronx.

Smithtown Native Gets Back to Work After Conquering Cancer – Twice

When Smithtown graduate Meredith Jorgensen was first diagnosed with cancer at age 28, in December of 2008, the initial reaction was denial, she recalls.

"It couldn't really be that," she said. "You hear about people having cancer scares. I figured it would be, like, 'Oh, OK. We'll figure it out.' But then it kept getting worse and worse."

Telecom Company Announces Bankruptcy; 130 Layoffs Looming

Personal Communications Devices of Hauppauge announced last week that as part of a bankruptcy settlement, it will be sold to an Orlando-based company, and over 130 employees will reportedly be laid off as a result.

Smithtown Widow Thanks Kings Park Fire Dept For Efforts to Save Husband

A Smithtown resident has reached out to share her public thanks to all members of the Kings Park Volunteer Fire Department for their efforts to aide her husband.

Donna Del Vecchio, wrote this letter to Patch, thanking all those who responded to a 911 on July 16 for her husband, Michael, who later died. He was 53.
