Patch Picks: Local Non-Profits Making A Difference

Our weekly guide of things to do and places to go in Commack. This week, we highlight some non-profits doing amazing work for the community.

With the holiday season in the rearview mirror, many people forget that there are people in need of help 365 days a year. Fortunately there are non-profit organizations working year round to assist the needy. This week, we take a look at some of the non-profits making a difference.

Huntington Community Food Council: Whether it's cold or hot outside, people still need to eat, and for some, finding a source of food is a daily worry. The Huntington Community Food Council welcomes donations and volunteering in its quest to feed the local hungry. Call 631-351-1060 for information.

: Humans aren't the only ones who need a little help. Sadly, there are more animals than there are homes for them. Little Shelter is just that, providing a (hopefully temporary) home for as many dogs and cats as it can fit.

: The world of dance can be incredibly competitive. But maybe you'd like to learn ballet just for the heck of it. In that case, pay a visit to the Frank Ohman School of Ballet, a non-profit that prides itself in teaching the graceful dance with words of encouragement rather than putdowns.

: When the Commack Middle School bell rings at 2:45 p.m., REACH CYA (Regional Enrichment Agency of Commack and Half Hollow Hills Community and Youth Agency) starts, offering kids 45 minutes of games and friendship-building time.
