Photo: Bullied Fruit

It fell off the ugly tree, literally.

During a trip to ShopRite in Commack, one will find a fruit with a rather disparaging name: the "unique ugly fruit." Good thing produce doesn't have feelings.

The fruit is a hybrid of a mandarin orange and pomelo and was discovered in Jamaica.

The sign in the produce section, spells the name as "ugly," but after a little research, we learned the fruit goes by several names, the most popular being "Ugli," which is the trademark of Cabel Hall Citrus Limited brand, or "Uniq" fruit. Either way, the name is fitting to its appearance - a bumpy, lumpy discolored and misshapen ball. We were told it tastes much better than it looks. While wrinkly and pockmarked on the outside, the inside is sweet, tangy, juicy and can be eaten like a grapefruit.

The tangelo, as its sometimes called, are just at the end of its season, so now is the time to try one.

ShopRite is selling them for $1.99 each.

Just remember, beauty is only skin deep.
