Shelter Animal of the Week

Take a look at Astaire, a special needs cat from the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter in Huntington.

Astaire is a cute young tuxedo cat who was abandoned with three other cats when his owners moved away, and was rescued by a neighbor.  He is now being cared for by the League of Animal Protection in Huntington and is living at the Grateful Paw Cat Shelter.

This unique cat is a Hemingway, also known as a polydactyl, as he has extra toes on each paw that make each paw look a bit like a mitten.  This is a caused by a genetic mutation, and is passed down through a cat's lineage.

Astaire has been diagnosed with feline AIDS, which is treatable and cannot be spread to humans.  It has a low rate of contagiousness to other cats, as it is mostly spread through fighting, causing open wounds where the virus can enter the body.

He is neutered, up-to-date with his routine shots, and house trained, but will require special attention for his condition.
