Shelter Animal of the Week: Meet Velvet

Velvet is a Hemingway cat who was brought to Smithtown Animal Shelter and is looking for a home.

Velvet is a polydactyl cat waiting to be adopted at .

Occasionally, cats are born with a naturally occurring genetic variation known as polydactylism, meaning they have extra toes. These cats, also known as “Hemingway cats” or “mitten cats” may be different, but the extra toes have no detrimental effects on a cat’s health.

Velvet is a domestic shorthair brown tabby who was abandoned at the shelter, pregnant and unwanted. She has since given birth to a healthy litter of kittens who have each been adopted.

Though she was skittish when she was first brought to the shelter, she has blossomed into a friendly cat who has learned to trust people and let her affectionate side show. This young girl has a siky coat, and loves to be pet while purring in your lap for hours.

Velvet is spayed, housetrained, and up-to-date with her routine shots.
