Shelter Animal of the Week: Take Home Tippy

Tippy is a year old kitten at Smithtown Animal Shelter who has cerebellar hypoplasia, which does not stop her from leading a near-normal life.

Tippy is not your average 1-year-old domestic shorthaired cat.

This young kitty at Smithtown Animal Shelter has cerebellar hypoplasia – a congenital underdevelopment of the cerebellum. The cerebellum is the region of the brain that controls balance, coordination, and movement. Cerebellar hypoplasia can effect cats and dogs, and causes tremors, jerky movements, and problems walking.

While one might feel sorry for Tippy, she acts just like any normal cat, just with shaky movements, and she does not seem to see herself any differently. Tippy is expected to live just as long as a cat without the condition, as she has learned to work with her uncoordination and get by in her day-to-day activities. She does not require any medication.
