Smithtown Youth Bureau Unveils its Summer Programs

Check out these nine summer programs for Town of Smithtown students.

Have a child eager to earn extra money babysitting this summer or a teen eager to learn leadership skills for the future? Smithtown Youth Bureau has a variety of programs to help local students continue learning this summer. 

Smithtown Youth Bureau offers nine summer courses for children entering grades 2 - 12 in the 2013-14 school. Topics range from Stranger Awareness to practical skills such as Babysitting Skills and Leadership Development. 

Here is a brief summer of their summer programs: 

Stranger Awareness
A four-week course that teaches young children about the dangers of interacting with strangers.

Second Step
A programs that helps children learn how to handle bullying, substance abuse, violence as well as empathy and communication. 
  • Grades 3 - 5

Positive Action
A program designed to help reinforce the philosophy that children should feel good about themselves when taking positive action.

Babysitting Skills
Does your child hope to make extra money babysitting this summer? Have them learn how to properly care for a child, market their skills and more in a four-week course. 
  • Grades 6 - 8

Children In Change
This program is for students facing a change in their family dynamics such as divorce, death, drug or substance abuse, jail. Children will be offered a safe place to talk about their feelings and learn coping mechanisms.

L.E.A.P 
This girls-only program stands for "Live, Empower and Perform." It's a combination of dancing under a professional instructor with a mentoring program for young girls.

Leadership Development
This leadership development course teaches students how to become effective leaders in a five-week course. It is the first part of the leadership series.

Leadership in the Community
This leadership course teaches students the skills necessary to participate in groups and lead school organizations, the workplace and society. It is the second part of the leadership series.

Safe Dates
Teaches teens about dating abuse and violence.

There are two additional summer programs that Smithtown Youth Bureau plans to offer, but details are not yet available: CPR Certification and Vocational Training.
