Snow Totals: 9 Inches on the Ground As Gov Declares Emergency

Official snow totals Tuesday evening show more than 9 inches on the ground in Lindenhurst, the highest on Long Island, as a winter storm that prompted Gov. Andrew Cuomo to declare a state of emergency earlier in the day continues to batter the area.

Snow totals were mostly reported between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m., and are most likely much higher as of this writing.

Cuomo called the state of emergency for Suffolk, Nassau, Richmond, Kings, Queens, New York, Bronx, Westchester and Rockland counties, and said he activated 239 plows, 27 front loaders and 428 operators on Long Island, in addition to dozens of private contractors ready to pitch in with the clean up.

“This winter storm will bring a one-two punch of snow and extreme cold. I urge all those in the affected regions to exercise caution, and avoid travel if possible,” Cuomo said. “State resources are deployed to clear snow and help those impacted by the storm, but above all it is important that New Yorkers remain safe both during and after the storm.”

Unlike the Jan. 2 blizzard, Cuomo chose not to close the Long Island Expressway on Tuesday. Meanwhile, commuters across the region reported spending 2-4 hours on gridlocked, icy roadways, as traffic crawled during the evening commute.
