This Week at Commack Library

A guide to the activities happening at your local library this week.

The  is a treasure trove of resources, with not just books and movies, but a variety of activities for every age group as well.  Here is a sampling of classes and events that are happening at your library this week.

Monday, Jan 17

Dancercise/Toning

Find out what's happening in Commackwith free, real-time updates from Patch.

  • Time: 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.
  • Description: Sign up for this class that meets twice a week and  includes low-impact dance and toning exercises.  Be sure to wear comfortable exercise attire and bring a towel, mat, water, and dumbbell weights.
  • Location: Community Room

Terrific Ted Arnold Story Time

  • Time: 2 p.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Description: Bring your 3 to 5 year old to listen to Ms. Diane read some of the works of Ted Arnold, author of Fly Guy and many more tales. Snacks will be served, and children must be able to attend on their own.
  • Location: Story Time Pit

Tuesday, Jan. 18

Building Better Credit

  • Time: 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Description: A representative of Bethpage Federal Credit Union will be at the library to discuss how to build good credit, what affects your credit score, and how to begin good financial practices to keep you on track.
  • Location: Community Room

Cancellations: “My Mittens” and “Noisy Critter” activities.

  • Time: 7:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  • Description: Bring your yoga mat and two firm towels or a block to this Iyenthar-style yoga class. All experience levels of those who practice yoga are invited to the Level 1 class, and those with six months or more of yoga practice are encouraged to take the Level 2 class.
  • Location: Community Room

Thursday, Jan. 20

Beginner Computer Classes

  • Time: 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
  • Description:  First-time adult computer users will be led through a slow-paced, user-friendly course on the basics of Windows computers.  Topics covered include turning the computer on and off, using the mouse and the desktop, and opening and closing programs.
  • Location: Community Room

Thursday Afternoon at the Movies

  • Time: 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
  • Description: The library will be showing the Julia Roberts film Eat, Pray, Love (PG-13) and serving refreshments.
  • Location: Community Room

Friday, Jan. 21

Are You Game?

  • Time: 1 p.m. – 5 p.m.
  • Description: Join friends and neighbors for an afternoon game of bridge or mahjong.
  • Location: Community Room

Saturday, Jan. 22

Butterfly Magnet Making

  • Time: 9:30 a.m. – 10:15 p.m.
  • Description: This arts and crafts activity is for 3 to 5 year olds to create a colorful butterfly out of coffee filters, dye, and clothespins.  A parent or caregiver must accompany the child during the activity.
  • Location: Community Room

Paper Weaving

  • Time: 11:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.
  • Description: Third to fifth graders are welcome to come and make colorful paper weaving crafts.
