Tips for Making Workouts a Priority

Establish a schedule and make the commitment, with goals and rewards along the way.

A new school year means a new routine and as you are working on preparing your kids for school, you can also prepare a new workout routine.

Exercise and nutrition are two of the most important elements for a successful fitness makeover. Here are a few tips for starting and staying with an exercise regime:

 1.  Write down a specific workout plan in your day planner; this way there is no need to make decisions when you get to the gym. For example: Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. – 30 minutes on a treadmill at Level 8 intensity, then two sets of squats with two 10lb dumbbells and a 10-minute series of abdominal exercises.

2. Get a partner or a personal trainer involved; either way, you will feel bad if you don't show up.  It locks you into a commitment that is harder to cancel. Always remember: There is strength in numbers.

3. Reward yourself often; however, not with food. Each time you reach a small goal, do something nice for yourself: facial, massage, a dress in a smaller size, etc.

 4.  A vital part of a good training regime is knowing how to listen to your body and giving yourself one day of rest a week. It is amazing how energized and motivated you feel when you return to the gym the next day.

5. Pair training with other key lifestyle changes. Focus on finding a healthy diet. Taking control of your diet can double the effects of working out.
