Video: Church Cemetery has Revolutionary War Ties

Commack United Methodist Church's cemetery dates back to the 1800s, with many historic town figures – and their families – buried there.

Commack United Methodist Church is the oldest church in continuous use in New York State. The graveyard behind the cemetery was established in 1789 when the Church was built. There are revolutionary war heros' graves, Commack founding family members' graves and interesting headstones that tell the history of Commack and the United Methodist Church.

The most interesting grave, Donna Etergineoso CUMC employee said, is the headstone with the story.

"There's a headstone with an entire story on it about how the man died. He was run over by a Hay truck. It details the events exactly, it's the most interesting stone there," Etergineoso said.

Muller said that many of the founding families have members in the CUMC cemetery. The boy scouts created a catalog of the head stones and divided them, alphabetically by name for the church as a service project.

Muller said none of the stones have been lost to vandalism and none have actually been lost at all.
