Commack Cemetery Attracts Visitors Despite Heavy Snow
Little signs prove family and friends come to remember loved ones year round at Commack Cemetery.
Dating back to the 1840s, the is as rich in history as it is beautiful to look at.
The Cemetery holds local legends like Marion Carll and several of the "Smithtown" Smiths, in addition to 14 Civil War veterans who survived the war and called Commack home, and five 9/11 victims.
Still, its the hundreds of unassuming headstones marked with lesser-known names that draw visitors back again and again. These visitors are the family members and friends who now serve as caretakers, quietly paying their respect, and leaving behind keepsakes, decorations...little signs of proof that they were there, reminding onlookers that these headstones represent lives and memories.
