Week in Review: The Pumpkin That Launched 1 Million Pies (sort of)

It's been a busy week in Commack.

Commack Man Grows Record-Settting Pumpkin

How many pies can you make out of a 1,456-pound pumpkin? Ask Commack resident Scott Armstrong, who set a new record in the Hicks Nurseries biggest pumpkin grown on Long Island contest Sunday.

Armstrong grew the pumpkin in his backyard. As the contest winner, he took home a $500 cash prize, as well as a ribbon and trophy.

Armstrong told reporters that it took five months to grow the massive gourd, which trumped his previous year's record which was set at 1,279 pounds.

New Tick Legislation Passes in County Legislature

New legislation that calls for construction of a plan to combat tick-borne disease passed the Suffolk County Legislature on Tuesday.

Familiar names are entering the race for New York's 1st Congressional District. Republican state Sen. Lee Zeldin, of Shirley, and George Demos, a Republican from Brookhaven Town who twice vied for the Republican nomination in this race, both announced recently they hope to challenge Rep. Tim Bishop, D-Southampton, next year.
