Commack Public Library Board Plans for 2011

New programs should spell success for the library in the new year.

At its monthly meeting Wednesday night, the Commack Public Library Board of Trustees reviewed the library's progress in 2010, and planned their next moves for making 2011 even more successful.

Library Director gave a presentation highlighting some of the new programs that were introduced to patrons in the past year, all of which were highly popular: Live-brary, where patrons can download e-books, music and audiobooks, the young adult volunteer program, which collected enough goods to send 18 care packages to soldiers in the Middle East, and a program which allows visitors to reserve museum passes online. Pastore also noted that the library's notary and fax services, which were introduced just last month, are a hit among the community.

In addition, the Board discussed several efforts made over the past year to make the library more environmentally friendly, including an increase in recycling receptacles, a transfer services from print to online, and the installation of energy efficient lights in the community room, which was made possible by a grant through LIPA's lighting stimulus plan, Pastore said.

The Board then reviewed the library's independent audit report, prepared by Albert Coster, CPA, for which they received a perfect rating.

Hot off the heels of a very successful year, the library will soon face a shake up, as the Commack-Smithtown Library is next month.

"From what I've seen, it will be beautiful. We are excited for them," said Pastore.

While she admits the library will see a drop in patrons once the opens, she believes that with the unique programs offered, the people of Commack will remain loyal. "We have so many patrons that enjoy utilizing the library. They'll stay," she said.
