A Taste of Sicily Comes to Commack

Lucia Pizza starts up its ovens at Northgate Shopping Center.

The best of New York City pizza is now cooking in Commack.

When Campa Pizzeria closed in September, it made the Northgate Shopping Center one of the few plazas in Commack without a pizzeria. That didn’t last long. Lucia Pizza quickly filled the void and is bringing the best of the New York City pizza to town.

The Moran brothers took over Lucia Pizza in Flushing, Queens in 1962, putting their Sicilian roots into their cooking. In 2012, CBS News named Lucia Pizza one of the five best pizzerias in Queens, calling it “pizza nirvana.” Now, locals can get that slice of pizza heaven here in Commack.

Mike Moran, whose food is just as authentic as his Sicilian accent, warmly greets his customers as soon as they enter the door and his nephew, Eddie, serves the items hot out of the oven.

There are few pizzas in the restaurant’s display case because Moran says he believes in serving customers the freshest food made the moment they order.

“We keep it simple. We try to give it to people as fresh as possible,” he said. The pizzeria does its meat toppings the right way too – “nothing frozen,” he added.

Mike runs the Commack location, while his brother, runs the Queens business. Lucia Pizza is best known for its cheese pizzas. Made with a thin crust, sweet tomato sauce, fresh cheese and just a bit of oil, the slices are plain delicious.

Pizza is the restaurant’s main seller, but it also offers heroes, pasta, calzones, chicken wings, garlic knots and chicken rolls.

Pizza toppings include pepperoni, sausage, extra cheese, anchovies, meatballs, jalapeño, onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomato, fresh garlic, olives, spinach, eggplant, ham, pineapple and chicken.

Prices are affordable including $16 for a large cheese pie or $17 for a Sicilian. Slices start at $2.50. There are several tables so that customers can dine in, as well.
