Babies "R" Us Expands to Bring Toys "R" Us to Commack

Commack Babies "R" Us undergoes construction, requests variance from Town of Smithtown to complete transformation.

Commack residents will shortly have a new option when it comes to shopping for children's toys and games.

in Commack's Kings Kullen Plaza is currently undergoing massive construction to expand and open a Toys "R" Us next door, as part of the company's side-by-side store format.

Shoppers on Tuesday afternoon entered a new entrance marked by temporary Babies "R" Us banner to get into the store. The former entrance to the baby store was fenced off as construction workers on lifts worked on renovating the interior of the store and front facade to reflect the Toys "R" Us style.

Smithtown Venture LLC, the owners of the Commack-based Babies "R" Us, filed an application with the Town of Smithtown's Planning Department on June 22. The company has requested a variance to increase the maximum height of the store's sign from 15 feet to 30 feet, 5 inches.

The new side-by-side stores hope to share one long, LED illuminated sign that reads "Toys "R" Us Babies "R" Us" in which the largest letter, the company's trademarked reverse "R" is 56 and 5/8 inches tall. The overall sign will cover 141.49 square feet, according to the variance application.

Toys "R" Us returned to its roots by offering childrens' clothing and toys in one location by creating side-by-sides wth Babies "R" Us starting in 2006, according to the company's website. These stores can vary in size from 30,000 square feet to 64,000 square feet.

The standard format for a side-by-side Toys "R" Us with a Babies "R" us is either both stores are full sized if the space allows, or the Toys "R" Us is slightly larger section.

According to the company's reported history, Toys "R' Us Corporation has 180 side-by-side stores across the nation and is continuing to renovate all its existing singular Toys "R" Us or Babies "R" Us stores to this style.

There is also construction of some sort going on in the former Border's store in the King Kullen Plaza. What is that going to be?

Actually
Its bringing Toys R US Back for us old timers It use to be across the Vets Highway in the 1970's-2000.

It probably makes sense. I always thought the old Toys R had pretty good foot traffic. It must have gone out for other reasons. Now all we need is a roller rink, a flea market and a minor league hockey team.

Wow, common sense at long last prevails. Nice to see them coming back to Commack. Maybe now they'll get good management and a good product mix with reasonable prices.
