Commack Alum Opens Hot Dog Restaurant in Northport

The Original Kaspers continues a family tradition.

Commack alum Marc Soojian is continuing his family legacy with the opening of in nearby Northport Village.

Soojian, who graduated from Commack High School in 1995, is a practicing anesthesiologist, but his familial food history has presented a more culinary path.

In 1929, Soojian’s great-grandfather Kapser opened a hot dog establishment in Oakland, California. That location remained with decendants, as Soojian’s grandfather Harry, with whom Marc was very close, ran the business for 50 years.

With the California location currently closed for renovations, he says he wants to keep his family legacy alive, citing that is sister is also a minority owner of the new location. Although Soojian intends to continue practicing medicine, his schedule will allow him to be a hands on kind of owner.

When questioned about starting a business in the current economy, Soojian was optimistic, stating that the California outpost survived not only the Great Depression, but more than a half century aftwerwards.

The menu is concise, as the dog is the star. Kasper's frankfurters have quite a snap, despite being steamed. A multitude of free toppings are offered, chili and cheese are additional. The current lunch special is a dog, bag of chips and a drink for $5 (harbor view from window seating included). Also available are a chicken dog and organic chicken sausage on a wheat bun. Most chips, candy and bottled water ring up only a dollar.

This Commack native is fostering the family vibe in a picturesque location- directly across from the park and harbor. Although Soojian has a special affinity for some Commack dining spots, especially recalling as a favorite, he is hoping the waterfront locale is a success this coming summer season and beyond, as he continues to share his delicious heritage.
