Labor Union Picketing At Forest Labs

Commack has a few new guests - six giant inflatable rats outside of Forest Laboratories.

The display is part of a labor union protest, in which the Laborers' International Union of North America is picketing outside of the building. Representatives of the organization claim that a union construction company, Grandview Construction, has hired non-union workers to complete work at the site.

John O'Brien, organizer for the Laborers' Eastern Region Organizing Fund, said that by hiring non-union workers, the company is taking away jobs from Long Islanders where the work is being done, and giving them to untrained workers who will do the job for less money.

"It's a snakey thing they're doing to pocket extra money," O'Brien said.

The union also protested at the Kings Park Psychiatric Center last year.

Grandview Construction was not able to be immediately reached for comment.
