Fans of the flavorful pan-Latin cuisine dished out at Maize Cantina in Commack were crushed by its sudden demise last July. But now, out of the ashes of the short-lived eatery tucked away in a strip mall on Jericho Turnpike has risen an even brighter star: Perfecto Mundo Latin Fusion Bistro.
Officially open for business since mid-September, Perfecto Mundo is a joint venture of Executive Chef Steven Del Lima, General Manager Liz Keschl and Operations Manager Jennifer Winter—and it’s pleasing the palates of Latin-food lovers throughout the area. “We’ve had a wonderful turnout so far,” says Keschl, who boasts extensive experience in the restaurant and catering industries. “The people of Commack and the surrounding communities have been so supportive.”
That’s thanks in large part to the creative culinary efforts of Del Lima, formerly of Black & Blue Seafood Chophouse in Huntington. Del Lima’s eclectic but reasonably priced menu is influenced by the flavors of Central and South America, with an emphasis on seafood. Current appetizers include ancho chili calamari and grilled sweet potato pancakes with pulled pork, while entrees run the gamut from chipotle-orange BBQ glazed tilapia to hickory-spiced shell steak. All food is made on the premises and cooked to order, and most selections are gluten-free. “Our goal is to offer Long Islanders an exquisite dining experience with down-to-earth prices,” says Del Lima.
For those looking to unwind after work, Perfecto Mundo also features an extensive array of bottled beers, sipping tequilas, sangrias and other mixed drinks available from behind the sleek bar, along with a bar menu that’s as vibrant as the lunch and dinner offerings. Live bands perform several nights a week, and the restaurant hosts special events on a regular basis (including a magic show on February 9 and a
three-course Valentine’s Day dinner on February 14). According to Keschl, “Every day is a party here.”
Perfecto Mundo Latin Fusion Bistro is located at 1141-1 Jericho Tpke.
