Looking Like a $1M Bucks Without Spending It at Kiss Consignment

The clothing store specializes in used designer clothing and accessories.

Have the fashion taste of the rich and famous, but on a budget? Kiss Consignment boutique at 6166 Jericho Tpke. is the place to be.

Owner Tanya Deutsch was a stay at home mom with a love for good quality clothes and great bargains. When her oldest child became a senior at Commack High School, she decided to turn her passion into a business. She opened Kiss Consignment in Smithtown four years ago, but when she decided to expand, she found a location, twice the size of the original store, in her hometown.

“I grew up in Commack and I moved back when my kids were starting school. I just love the area,” she said. The move was a match made in designer heaven as well.

“It’s been amazing. It’s better than I could have ever imagined. I have people coming from all over New York to sell their items,” she said.

While the shop is a used-clothing store, the items are nothing like what you’d find in grandma’s closet. Almost every item in the store is from within two fashion seasons. Markdowns take place every 30 days, so the inventory is always updated, as well.

However, Deutsch does have a selection of vintage items too for those looking for original designer handbags, or rare items.

“I have an old soul, so when I see a vintage bag come in, that’s really special for me. I wonder where it came from, where the person wore it and the history behind it,” she said, pointing out a Channel purse from the 1950s.

Shoppers at the store can find clothes, bags, shoes, jewelry and other accessories from designers such as Dior, Tiffany & Co., Louis Vuitton, Versace, Prada, Givenchy, Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Channel, Gucci and others. All items are between 60 and 80-percent-off retail prices.

While the prices draw customers to the store, it’s the experience that keeps them coming back.

“The customers here are very loyal. You get to know everyone so quickly. I like it because you see the people who would shop here with their moms now graduating high school and that’s a nice feeling,” Deutsch said.

“I compare it a beauty salon because you shop, but you also socialize and talk and get to know each other,” associate Marty Sloane, Deutsch’s right-hand woman added.

While the economic downturn put many mom-and-pop shops in the red, Kiss consignment has been able to take advantage of the slump.

“Ever since the market drop, I think it’s become a cool thing to do to get a bargain. People brag about buying a used item now,” Deutsch said.

“My theory is that everyone likes nice things and if you can’t afford a designer wardrobe, buy someone else’s,” she said with a laugh.

While the store is able to take advantage of the vintage fashion trend, it also can add the green lifestyle to its repertoire. Not only does the store support the green movement by selling used items, but it will also donate 15 cents to a charity of a shopper’s choice if the customer brings in their own bag, instead of using the store’s plastic ones to take their items home in.

In order to sell one’s items, a person must make an appointment with the store (631- 979-5477). There is a minimum of 10 items for clothing consignment. Once the item sells, the owner gets 40 percent of the profit.

Kiss Consignment is open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m.
