Nearby: Farmers Market Open For Business

TFCU hosts local farmers on Motor Parkway each Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. this summer.

The Hauppauge farmers market celebrated its grand opening Thursday with a line up that will make taste buds dance.

Teachers Federal Credit Union hosts the market in its parking lot, located at 102 Motor Parkway.

Vendors sell locally grown produce, baked goods, jams and jellies, freshly-made crepes, seafood and more.

"Participants only sell what they make, grow or catch," Ethyl Terry, who heads the Long Island Growers Market, said.

Not only does the market give farmers a place to do business, but it also fulfills the need for fresh food in a nearby "food desert," in Brentwood, where residents have little to no access to local, fresh produce.

"Food insecurity is growing, especially as incomes are stagnating or declining," Sarah Eichberg, of Adelphi University, said.

Lynne Viccaro O'Leary of TFCU, who came up with the idea to host the market, said that shoppers had been coming since since 7:30 a.m.

The farmers market is open from 7:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. every Thursday until Aug. 29.
