Nearby: T. Carlton's Spalon Shuts Down Overnight

Customers arrive at spa to find cancelled appointments, looking for returns on gift cards.

Dozens of customers flocked to a popular Smithtown salon on Friday morning to find their appointments canceled and seek returns on unused gift cards.

T. Carlton's Spalon put up a handwritten note reading, "Sorry, we are closed. We are going out of business," on its doors on Friday.

Antoinette, a hair stylist who works at T. Carlton's, confirmed the hair salon and day spa is closing, but would not go into any further details.  She said many of the staff members will be move their business to nearby Cactus Salons.

Many frustrated customers were gathering in the salon's parking lot, looking for returns on unused gift cards.  One woman, who did not wish to be named, said she had a $300 balance on a gift card and she was unsure if it would be honored.

Alan Heyman, a Nesconset resident, said he picked up a phone call from his wife's hair stylist at Carlton's on Thursday evening reporting the salon would be closed by Saturday. The phone call caught him off guard.

"They’ve been a staple in the community for a long time, they are always appearing to be busy and seem to have a good business model there," Heyman said.

He had recently purchased a $100 gift certificate for his wife, Kim.

"I knew my wife had a $100 gift card still, so I told her 'You need to get over there and figure out what’s going on," Heyman said.

She visited the spalon on Thursday night, but was without much success.

Heyman said as the gift card was recently purchased using an American Express credit card, he placed a phone call to the company to dispute the charges. He believes he might be one of the lucky ones.
