Pathmark Leaves Big Spot to Fill [Empty in Commack]

The former grocery store served as the anchor property for the shopping center on Jericho Turnpike.

The early last spring left a large retail space vacant in Commack.

The store, which up until its closing served as the anchor property for the shopping center on Jericho Turnpike, is the only vacant retailer in the strip. Nearby stores include the popular pizzeria and restaurant as well as clothing retailer .

A sign on the side of the poperty indicates that there is 48,000 sq. ft. of available space for rent.

What would you like to see take Pathmark's place? Should another big retailer fill the spot, or should it be split up among smaller stores?

We need a Fairway Market
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 02:41 am
i'd prefer wild by nature, food emporium or whole foods; however TOP PREFERENCE IS FOR A PAN-ASIAN SUPERMARKET AS IN PLAINVIEW AND NEW HYDE PARK...WITH A HUGE, VERY FRESH FISH DEPARTMENT PLUS OTHER ASIAN SPECIALTIES. (WE REALLY DON'T HAVE A DECENT FISH MARKET IN THE AREA, UNLESS YOU TRAVEL ON 25A ALMOST INTO HUNTINGTON VILLAGE OR THE PLACE IN FORT SALONGA/NORTHPORT...BOTH ARE QUITE PRICY.)

Catfish Annie's is a good fish market and they have great, reasonable lunches, too. Waldbaum's on Jericho Tpke in Commack also has a good seafood dept.

Since we are "neighbors" to this strip mall the residents are hoping for a "good neighbor" who can respect the homes that are adjacent to the area.
Karen Forman October 20, 2011 at 01:08 pm
That would be nice, wouldn't it?

Retro fitness
Gayle Jacobson-Turk October 20, 2011 at 01:23 pm
Fairway would be great
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 01:26 pm
YES, BY ALL MEANS RENEE...QUALITY OF LIFE ISSUES ARE OF UTMOST IMPORTANCE. I HOPE THAT RESIDENTS ARE CONSULTED WITH BEFORE ANY BUSINESSES LOCATE ANYWHERE THAT WILL AFFECT RESIDENTAL AREAS IN COMMACK!
Karen Forman October 20, 2011 at 01:29 pm
There's a Retro Fitness maybe a mile down the road from where the Pathmark was. And it's a great one. I go there almost daily!
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 01:47 pm
we have enough fitness centers within close distance from anywhere in commack. we don't need another commack business to close down...think pathmark, borders, linen 'n things, golden corral, furniture depot, sushi park, et al. these failures are bad for commack.
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 01:50 pm
a full- line, pan-asian market, complete with a fresh seafood dept. would be great. people flock to those in plainview and new hyde park.
Patricia Reinhardt October 20, 2011 at 02:20 pm
I would love to see a Toys "R" Us to replace the one we lost.
James Turzer October 20, 2011 at 02:37 pm
How about a new Pathmark?
chefcristo October 20, 2011 at 02:47 pm
prices at pathmark, especially produce prices, are mighty high, shop around: try best yet or giunta's meat farms. guaranteed, you'll save $$ big time, especially for produce.
James Daulton October 21, 2011 at 01:39 am
Use www.needthishere.com to request specific businesses for this, and other, locations!
chefcristo October 21, 2011 at 02:02 am
...sounds like a good idea, james. it seems that if commack residents use this site, the requests should be narrowed down somewhat, although i'm not sure of the mechanics involved to do this and to form a loosely united front. perhaps PATCH has some savvy advice about how to assist residents in this matter.
Laurie S. October 22, 2011 at 12:38 pm
I say, move the Trader Joes to Pathmark store.
I agree we need a Fairway or whole foods too.
chefcristo October 22, 2011 at 12:47 pm
i still say a pan-asian market would be best. it would introduce a more culturally diverse influence to commack, plus offer difficult- to- find products not offered in the run-of-the-mill markets we have here. WE CERTAINLY DON'T NEED ANOTHER PATHMARK!
mona October 26, 2011 at 01:30 am
I would love Uncle Guissespi's or Whole Foods!!!!!
Dommy77 November 22, 2011 at 04:54 pm
Uncle Guiseppe's would be nice, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Qdoba,
chefcristo November 22, 2011 at 07:40 pm
again, a pan-asian full-service food super market with a fresh fish department would do quite well in that spot. check out those in new hyde park and plainview...incredible...all the asian specialties one could ask for, plus a reasonable and very fresh produce service. they also carry many american products as well.
Renee November 23, 2011 at 12:17 am
Anything that will not cause noise disturbances would be welcomed! Our neighbors who live adjacent to this strip mall need to have a quality of life.
chefcristo November 23, 2011 at 01:06 am
yes renee, in total agreement with your comment. hope we commackians will stick together on the issue you describe, no matter where in commack we reside!
chefcristo November 23, 2011 at 01:22 am
also on the big issue of "quality of life," is it my own vision or are parts of commack becoming VERY UNSIGHTLY? to wit: just some of the following closures some more prominently ugly than others.....sushi park, former gas station corner of jericho & harned, pathmark, borders (in october just another one of those unsightly halloween places) charlie browns...you get the picture, the list goes on even in some less obvious strip malls. i think james daulton (see his comments above) might be on the right track. i also have to wonder if any of our town and county political representatives could offer advice and support concerning keeping commack and surrounding towns from becoming run down and slummy. THIS MIGHT BE AN INTERESTING ANGLE FOR PATCH TO FOLLOW UP ON IN FUTURE FEATURE ARTICLES.

This is becoming Dick's Sporting Goods
chefcristo January 8, 2012 at 02:25 am
there's sports authority here already, and it doesn't appear to have much more of a future: high prices and poor service (that's what i've experienced.) there's a dick's sporting goods just 15 minutes away, at the smithhaven mall. more commack residents seem to want another food store, myself included, and, i repeat: a pan-aisan/american market. among other items, they carry the freshest fish (much of it live) and produce i've seen in a long time. check out those markets in plainview and new hyde park.
Renee January 8, 2012 at 02:59 am
Is it definite for Dicks Sporting Goods? Seems like building is small.
CJ M. January 8, 2012 at 04:35 am
A food store would be great. But it's definite for dicks. Rumor has it that Smithtown Waldbaums is going to be LA fitness. That would be a real bummer.
Jenny Marie February 23, 2012 at 12:33 am
Dicks is going to go in there.

Joe: I don't think they will give you any contact info just in case you turn out to be some sort ofRead More kook or stalker. How would you like to be responsible for that security breach?
CommackHack June 17, 2013 at 11:43 am
i believe the best way to locate your teacher is through the commack teachers association (cta).Read More contact the union president, tris stewart, and write a short note. include all the contact information you're comfortable with and wait a bit? 33 years is a long time. good luck.

I know exactly what she's about and that's why I'm trying to spread the word. She confronts theRead More lies and the deceit in the Affordable Care Act. And that needs to be brought to the forefront
