Restaurant Opens at Former Charlie Brown's Steakhouse Site

Grill 454 offers upscale dining on Veterans Memorial Highway.

A new restaurant has taken over the former location on Veterans Memorial Highway in Commack.

The aptly named Grill 454 opened for business Wednesday in the King Kullen Shopping Center.

The upscale restaurant, which is currently decked out in holiday decor, has piqued the curiosity of many Commack residents who have eagerly awaited for the spot to fill since being by Charlie Brown's Steakhouse when they closed in November 2010 after filing for bankruptcy.

Owner Lenny Passarelli, whose family ran Scotty’s in Rockville Centre for more than 45 years, also co-owns AJ Maxwell's Steakhouse and Statler Grill, both located in New York City.

The restaurant took to their Twitter feed Wednesday evening, tweeting, "We're officially open! Come visit us..."

Will you visit Grill 454? Tell us in the comments.

Stay tuned for more on the restaurant's opening.

i agree people who pay top dollar should get the best humanly possible, but humans make errors at all price ranges and you seem unforgiving. No one nowhere is perfect...ever. and if you re read some of your comments you will see some grave exagerrations possibly at the extent of others livlihoods. and again why would you want to see the buliding vacant because your experience wansnt perfect. Are all the meals you prepare for your customers perfect chef? 454 may not be for every budjet i agree but does that mean a king kullen shopping center is beneath having an pricey bistro?
scz January 12, 2012 at 02:48 am
hey i agree. Not trying to go tit for tat with the guy and this is america we can all voice our opinions but lets be reasonable and fair. There are more important issues in this world. But i stand by what i said, you dont like a place then why go back..even for a freebie.
scz January 12, 2012 at 02:57 am
by the way did you actually eat there or just commenting on what your reading by others. Seems to me after re reading your comments you never actually ate there! Please feel free to correct me if im wrong.
chefcristo January 12, 2012 at 03:11 am
no room for the extent of errors noted by others who responded to this issue. as for "bitchin'," when one doesn't get the value he/she pays for it's time to bitch. caveat emptor. if premium $ are paid, premium service is expected...no exceptions, no errors, especially as another responder noted: sent the steak back TWICE, an upscale "no no." and no, the kk shopping center is not beneath having a "pricey bistro." but a more family-oriented eatery seems more appropriate for that location.
scz January 12, 2012 at 03:13 am
really. have you eaten there? Its a fair question for someone with such strong opinions as yourself chef
scz January 12, 2012 at 03:23 am
hey thats fair enough. but you dont like to answer questions. you have the most comments on this place than anyone. Have YOU actually eaten there? Im done with the commenting but your readers of your valuable and knowledgable opinions would like to knowif you speak from personal experience or not.
scz January 12, 2012 at 03:34 am
upscale is for manhattan or places like the americana mall in manhasset, certainly not in the king kullen shopping center. that was a direct quote from one of your many comments.sounds pretty "snooty" to me chef.Like living in commack means upscales inapproprate for the area. Im signing off this patch ive had enough hypocracy.

patty nestola January 12, 2012 at 08:42 pm
maybe its time to see for ourself what grill 454 is all about and be our own judge on what we think about this place and try to remember its only dinner try to enjoy and have fun isnt that qhat its all about
KPLifer January 12, 2012 at 09:03 pm
If he were an actual Chef, he would be bragging about his restaurant and credentials. He advises folks to go to the chinese buffets and was hoping for a golden crap buffet.

Chefcristo..Have you even been there?? Have you ever owned a restaurant? Do you know the cost of food?
If you do go...perhaps you should ask for the owner. You just keep going on and on and on and on and on and on......i think it's time to stop. I have been there...It's great!
patty nestola January 12, 2012 at 09:46 pm
maybe we should all judge for ourselfs and relax and have a great meal at grill454 with good company and have a fun nite ( it beats staying home cooking ) god bless and enjoy
chefcristo January 13, 2012 at 02:04 am
hi anonymous. sure i wash dishes at an asian buffet...that's in my spare time. are you being critical of honest dishwashers? you even criticize asian buffets. have you ever seen the crowds at the one in mayfair? AND i never criticized 454; all i did was to respond to those who gave it bad reviews from THEIR experiences there. perhaps those of you who have given me the "raspberries" should review both the good and the bad stuff in the comments written here.
SpecialOne January 13, 2012 at 01:18 pm
Maybe you should just go to the resurant and not comment again until you have. Sounds like everyone here will be better off without you, flueing fires. Go eat at 454 and come back and tell us what YOU think of the resurant.
KPLifer January 13, 2012 at 01:46 pm
And you still refuse to anser the questions. Crowds? fat, unhealthy people who like to eat crap.
chefcristo January 15, 2012 at 02:27 pm
hi special one, you don't have to bite a doughnut to know that it's sweet; but that's not to say that i haven't bitten a doughnut!

My Husband and I tried our Grill 454 with the kids. The service was horrible. I mean really bad. They gave me the "kids menu" written with pencil on a dirty piece of paper. There seemed to be a lot of people doing nothing. After seeing another table ask for bread, we asked and about 15 minutes later got some. It took about 20 minutes for someone to take our order and 27 minutes (yes we counted) to get our table cleared and get our check.
NOW THE FOOD.... I have to say, the food was very good. They could not cook a burger at the correct temperature to save their lives. No one seemed to understand the difference between med-rare and hockey-puck well. Finally, my kids got their burgers (3rd try) medium. Even at medium, which is over cooked for them, they are soft and delicious. The fries were excellent. The filet was perfectly cooked and delicious. The prices were pretty reasonable but it still looks like Charlie Browns to me. Some new fabric on the booths does not make that much of a difference. Today, customer service is so important. Although the food was very good, I would not return because the service was that bad. If you want a much better dining experience, try Insignia Steakhouse in Smithtown.... They have gotten it right there!!!!!

Hey alledged chef. Where is your restaurant? We all want to come and review it.
We Heart Long Island January 17, 2012 at 02:35 pm
Why so nasty? They are just giving their opinion.
We Heart Long Island January 17, 2012 at 02:36 pm
Again so negative.
We Heart Long Island January 17, 2012 at 02:37 pm
Why so nasty? Do you know this person?
We Heart Long Island January 17, 2012 at 02:37 pm
Another negative comment. Interesting.
KPLifer January 17, 2012 at 03:44 pm
Just asking for answers - all he does is complain

We recently had "Girls Night Out" at Grill 454 and we had a wonderful time! Some of us had the french onion soup and we had a nice sampling of appetizers. I had the salmon, my friends ordered the chicken marsala and shrimp scampi. We all enjoyed our meals and felt the staff was very accomodating. We live locally and are all working moms and it felt so good to go out and socialize together. We all agreed we would go back and welcome them to our community.

My friends and I just ate there this weekend. I do have to say that the service was wonderful, but that's it. We were not told that there are 2 menus, one for each side. We had decided to eat on the dining room side, big mistake. The food was ok, not what I had expected for the prices that they charge. The menus are printed from a laser printer and stuck into a leather case. One of the ones we got was so worn that my friend thought he needed new glasses because all of the words were half gone. Good try, but I don't think that they have reached the level to be referred to as "upscale".

To the gentlemen who recommended Insignia steak house a few comments above, you must have been seriously fooled by the extravagant designs Insignia uses to cover it's lack in cuisine. Insignia is insanely priced for food that is honestly just not that good. I have been to both restaurants and can honestly say that both the food and service of Grill 454 are hands down better than that of Insignia. To the few above that are complaining of a bad meal or issues with service, I must urge you to consider a few things, the restaurant is brand new and must of course work out a few kinks here and there just like any other business. You also picked New Year's eve to attend a brand new steak house, it is impossible to expect the same kind of service on such a high volume night. The night I ate there I had the pleasure of meeting Lenny who was mentioned above and I can honestly say I find it incredibly difficult to believe that he could be considered anything but customer focused. According to our brief discussion he is the owner of two other steak houses in New York city both of which are incredibly successful. Again I feel that the few negative comments above are sheerly bad eggs that wish to complain simply because they can. My dining experience at Grill 454 was more than I expected and I will certainly be bringing all of my friends along with me the next time I go. I urge everyone to give it a shot, it's definitely an excellent dining experience.

We are sitting at the bar on a Saturday evening. We wanted to give the place a chance as we heard the food was good. We had a great experience. Al and Jen at the bar were very attentive and made sure we felt welcome and not in need of anythimg.
We had a Goat Cheese Salad,A Wedge Salad to start both were of excellent size. Enought to share really. My wife had the Fillet om baguette slices while I had the Burger. Both arrived cooked correctly and of generous size to boot! We will be back for more.

We walked in and the greeter was on her cell phone, we sat and were not acknowledged for a while. Our waitress was very sweet. I ordered a riesling and she said "oh I don't think we have that yet," so I ordered a white zin, same response. I ordered a malbec, and she came back with a riesling. I am not picky whatsoever, but I also tend to not visit a new restaurant, until they have the kinks worked out. The food was not good at all, we were sure to tip well based on the full check as they did not charge us for either entree. I won't go back with so many other places to choose from.

Joe: I don't think they will give you any contact info just in case you turn out to be some sort ofRead More kook or stalker. How would you like to be responsible for that security breach?

i believe the best way to locate your teacher is through the commack teachers association (cta).Read More contact the union president, tris stewart, and write a short note. include all the contact information you're comfortable with and wait a bit? 33 years is a long time. good luck.
