Smithtown Officials Approve Forest Labs Plans to Expand

Hauppauge-based pharmaceutical company gets permission to expand its Commack location by more than 30,000 square feet.

Smithtown elected officials have given Forest Laboratories approval to expand its Commack location by more than 30,000 square feet.

Smithtown Town Board members voted unanimously after Tuesday's board meeting to approve to its

The Hauppauge-based pharmaceutical company submitted plans on Jan. 20 to the Smithtown Planning Department requesting multiple variances to build a 32,600-square-foot expansion. The company states the expansion is for "new building functions such as laboratories, clinical packaging, data center, office and amenities."

By adding a second story to the existing building, Forest Laboratories will increase the height of their offices to 43 feet, eight feet above the 35-foot maximum height permitted under the town's zoning code. The height variance was requested so the manufacturer can install skylights and a cooling tower.

Other additions that will be made under the expansion include a new 430-stall parking lot, improvements to the current sanitary and stormwater drainage, and wastewater treatment.

Forest Laboratory's Commack location is with close proximity to several residential homes. The new parking lot will come within 100-feet of these residential properties.

The company claims the expansion, once completed, will bring an additional 410 employees to its Commack location. It is not clear whether these are new employees or transfers from one of its nearby locations.

Do you live near Forest Laboratories? Are you bothered by the company's plans to expand or grateful for the potential jobs it will bring to the area? Tell us in the Comments below.

“Real bad move for Commack residents.”
Forest labs is not bringing jobs to Commack! Their shutting down their buildings in Hauppauge and moving their employees to Commack! Now we will have smoke stacks and bigger traffic jams on Commack road! Real smart Smithtown! “What’s next a Commack Industrial Park”

True, but if Smithtown said "No", then Forest would have possibly left LI all together.

A "Commack Industrial Park" sounds good to me. Also "ANYTOWN" industrial park is good. Obviously you don't need a job, you must be retired and on disability with double dipping pension on top of that. And I bet you golf every day. How much of your income is coming from tax revenues?

Thought I lived in a neighborhood, apparently I invested in an industrial park. I can only imagine the negative impact on the local residents .

To all those who think this is a great idea, obviously you don't own property in the neighborhood next door or you would be singing a different tune as your the value of the property you have worked hard to pay for takes a nose dive!

Its so nice that the other half of the residents who reside in the "Town of Huntington's elected officials did nothing to stop this, so we all have to put with another 410 cars going up and down Commack Road every morning and every evening! Commack Road can't handle the traffic that the town of Smitown has shoved down our throats from the likes of Home Depot, Kohl's, WalMart, Target, and Costco. Afterall none of those Smithtown Board members live hear and or have to drive up and down Commack Road 5 times a day just get anywhere! It's about time the The Town of Huntington Board, take a look at what the Town Board of Smitown in doing on their eastern and southern borders! If you agree, let me know, who's with me??

“George” You’re an ass! I’m a in my twenties with a wife and two kids. We just moved into the neighborhood. Keep your dumb ass opinions to yourself and get a life Dude! Move to Hauppauge so you could get to your factory job on time!

All the "Big Box' stores and traffic on Commack Road and Crooked Hill Road are wrecking havoc on us all! Lets hear from from some of OUR politicians. Do they care????
