What Our Readers Think: Hess Plans Approved

A roundup of readers' thoughts on Smithtown Town officials approving Hess's plans for Jericho Turnpike and Harned Road.

Patch readers had a lot to stay this week about the Smithtown Town Board's 3-2 decision to grant a change of zoning that will allow . The issue has been one of intense controversy for the past two months - as many resides remembered fighting against the same plans in 2009.

The following is a round-up of what our readers had to say. Keep the conversation going and post your thoughts in the comment section below.

wrote, "Dumb move. Commack doesn't need another gas station. They just opened a Hess east of the site. Traffic will be worse. This will have a negative affect on Gasoline Heaven who has been there forever. Smithtown planning doesn't listen to the public so why have hearings."

commented, "Simply put, the board's decision is not what the majority of commack residents want, and it should be overturned and overruled!"

voiced their support, writing," I am so glad the board members saw thru the strong arm tactics of the protestors . Jobs , taxes , environmental cleanup , site development of an eyesore . It will be safer now that cars will not be backed up onto RT 25 in front of the Gulf station but will now be in the Hess station getting gas . Finally the eye sore will be gone . Go Hess Go !"

said, "Don't be so upset, everything will be fine. The corner will finally be cleaned up, a new business will flourish. Will there be car accidents? yes, because people will be on their phones, run the red light, make illegal U turns, etc just like all the other intersections on LI."

Mary Gallagher Ryan commented on Commack Patch's Facebook page, "What a shame... So sorry Rudy. This will just take jobs away from a family business that's been there forever. Stay strong gasoline heaven. We will always support you."

said, "The company has rights to open business where they wish, although I think we could've done better than a gas station. If your issue is safety then you gotta close down friendly's and the spare rib sicne they're at the same intersection. hey, why don't we close down ALL the stores on a busy intersection."

Meredith Zaretsky Weiss wrote on Commack's Facebook page, "Never buying Hess gas is all we can do at this point! I love gasoline heaven! I will only buy from Rudy! He is a man of the community employing very nice people from the community and the man is a very hard worker. He is always cleaning, keeping things inviting fixing, making things right for his customers. No Hess gas for me."

said, "Glad to get rid of that eyesore, years ago it was Shell and there were no issues. Hess is a US based company and doesn't rip off customers with prices or charge card fees."

Who do we hold legally responsible when there is a major accident coming off of the Sunken Meadow? The town or Hess?

Oh god not this again !!

new guy March 26, 2012 at 12:03 AM
i think its great. hess devolpes propertys nicely. it will be a positive for the town. people who already shop down the road will be loyal so whats the big deal. terry if im driving and get into an accident because the sun was in my eyes, who do i get to take to court. when did we as a society become not responsible for our own actions....ever? a kid fights with another kid, its the cartoons or the video games fault. its NEVER mommy or daddys or the kids fault. damn laywers screwed this world up with the help of liberals.

A boarded up eye-sore, that used to be a gas station, will become a gas station again. What I find intrigueing is that some residents, I hardly think "a majority of Commack residents" are opposed to this decision. But, I am open-minded, and am willing to see the evidence of this alleged majority, can someone quote a poll that was taken by a polling firm or any other reliable organization that shows this alleged anti-gas station majority in Commack? ... I am hearing only crickets again.

Glad to see that corner wil be fixed up. So much concern over competition. If Gasoline Heaven wants to keep customers drop the 10 cet charge for credit cards that every other gas station charges. It isnt fair anyway. People will go right by the hess station to avoid that surcharge I am ure Heas will have.
Sandra Lee March 26, 2012 at 10:48 AM
I am sure that Rudy would love not to charge a difference with the credit card, but is only passing this on from the credit card company. Perhaps we should be looking at why they are allowed to charge these crazy prices in the first place. Hess can charge what they want, this is a huge oil company, not a small retailer who can't compete. The banks and the oil companies are only ones making a profit. Almost forgot about all those taxes.............where is that going? The corner will look better but anything else would have made more sense.

Why was my post deleted???????

Everyone just

Everyone just needs to calm down a little bit with the anti Hess anti gas station rhetoric. I remember a few years back there was a fatal accident at that intersection and there was no gas station there then. There are and will be accidents there because 75% of people drive around commack on the cell phone while texting and putting make up on and reading the newspaper. Not to mention the other 10% who just drive around with their heads up their asses. If people would stop worrying about a gas station and start thinking a little more about the other people in this world this issues that actually matter this would seem very very trivial. Lastly, as a homeowner in commack, I would rather see a gas station on every vacant lot than nothing. Vacant and delapidated land drives property value down. Don't know about you but if I'm going to pay $10k a year in property taxes I would like my home value to be on par with that.

How many years has that lot been empty?? Sick of looking at that!! I am happy that Hess is going in there. Hess has the cleaniest gas stations. GO HESS!!
Irondog March 26, 2012 at 04:40 PM
Yay.. More competition in the area. That's what is much needed...
Deborah March 26, 2012 at 05:18 PM
I am glad to see the eyesore go, Hess keeps a neat clean looking station...I wish now something will take over the property next to and across from the Commack Carwash!!!! Commack is a beautiful area to live in, but sometimes driving down Jericho Tpke, I wonder where am I living!!!
new guy March 26, 2012 at 08:14 PM
Rudy has loyal customers. I don't think it will hurt him much. I think Hess does a nice job with their property's. It will be nice to see it developed.
Don Walsh March 26, 2012 at 10:12 PM
I hope the people who think the Hess station is a good idea are the ones sitting behind the idiot that try's to turn in to the Hess station over the double yellow line, or blocks up the turn lane.
new guy March 27, 2012 at 12:41 AM
Don in all fairness I've been in the turning lane going east on Jericho and have had seen and have had cars come off the parkway and join me in turning left onto Indian head. So there's definitely a problem there already. Does anyone remember what the off ramp from the parkway to harned road used to look like? That was hairy. Property owners have the right to develope their properties. Let's hope it works out. We need bussissness's to come to smithtown. Kings park, smithtown, and St. James main streets are hurting. I hope Rudy keeps his loyal customers.
