Pet Insurance, Is It Worth It?

Pet Insurance can make a life and death decision much easier. Remember this: Our lives are determined by the things we never plan.

Dear Pet Owners-

I am very passionate about my job as a veterinarian and do this because I love animals and want to help them. I feel that we also, as veterinarians, do a lot to help prevent human anguish and suffering over our pets.

Most people believe that if they have done everything possible for their pets, while allowing them to maintain an excellent quality of life, then they are happy and can live with anything that may go wrong.

Unfortunately, today that is a luxury for most. Often times, things happen in our lives and with our pets' health that can be out of our control- such as an accident causing broken bones, stomach bloat or cancer. We often do not have funds available to diagnose and treat our pets under these circumstances.

This is where insurance comes in. Insurance gives us the ability to treat our pets under any circumstances (usually, depending on the company). When the cost of care is not in the equation, the care is often better, more thorough and everyone sleeps better at night knowing that the financial burden is lifted, and we can treat our pets without the fear of high veterinary bills cutting into college funds.

Pet insurance does have a price, but the price of making life and death decisions based on money is often much higher. Please discuss insurance with your veterinarian. Visit trupanion.com for an honest comparison of many types of insurance to see if there is one for you. There are varying options, please consider this for your sake as well as your pet's.
