No Cause Found for Marist College Fire

Investigators unable to determine that sparked the fire that killed Commack native Kerry Fitzsimons.

New York investigators are unable to determine what sparked the fatal fire near Marist College that killed a Commack native. 

The Hartford Courant reports that after weeks of investigations New York investigators could not determine the source of the Jan. 21 fire that killed Kerry Fitzsimons and two other Marist College students. 

Investigators ruled out heating systems, portable heaters, cooking equipment, electrical devices and distribution, smoking materials, spontaneous ignition, lightning and solar energy as potential causes of the fire, according to the Harford Courant.

Marist College has established a scholarship fund in memory of Fitzsimons, the 21-year-old student who  in January.

Several family members and friend have contributed to the scholarship funds in memory of Fitzsimons, Block and Johnson. The College's Board of Trustees has also donated $25,000 to each of the three funds, Marist College President Dennis Murray wrote.
