Commack Power Outage Update: Residents Slowly Regaining Power

More than half of customers left in the dark by Irene have had their power restored Monday.

Commack residents without power are slowly seeing restorations Monday afternoon, according to numbers from the Long Island Power Authority's website.

According to LIPA's storm outage map, 4,319 customers out of 13,167 in Commack are still without power. However, that number is down significantly from the Sunday night into early Monday.

Most businesses in Commack opened Monday morning, with the exception of Waldbaum's and neighboring shops on Vanderbilt Parkway and the Commack branch of the Smithtown Library, which are still without electricity.

Several major traffic lights are still out, including the intersection of Vanderbilt Parkway and Commack Road and along Jericho Turnpike, east of Mayfair Shopping Center.

It is not yet clear when power will be restored to all residents. LIPA head was in "damage assessment mode."

As of Monday morning, a total of 419,538 LIPA customers were without power, marking Long Island's largest outage in 26 years.
