How Long Was Your Cable/Internet/Phone Down During Sandy?

Much was made about power outages, but many struggled to find reliable phone, Internet and cable connections in the wake of the storm as well.

Following the path of Hurricane Sandy at the end of October, nearly a month ago, much was made as hundreds of thousands – at the peak of the damage, nearly one million – Long Island Power Authority customers were without power in their homes and businesses.

Since, several high-ranking members of the power provider, including interim-CEO Michael Hervey, have announced their intent to step down.

But for those who did have power during and shortly after Sandy, many struggled to find a means of finding out what was going on, as cable, Internet, and phone connections were likewise affected by the monster storm. At the same, in many cases when the lights came back on, their communications services were still down.

Many cable providers offered credits for those who were unable to access their service during and after the storm. Our question is: how long did you lose connection for? And how did you get up-to-date information while your connections were down?

Let us know in the comments.

Readers have already begun discussing this on Facebook: Janine Pisano-Record said, "we were out for four days...can't really complain so many others had it worse off than us." Ellen Monaghan Kaspar wrote, "About a week...not sure, it was at worst an inconvenience. We all need to learn to be less dependent on our modern conveniences and we'd be a lot better off." Lew Chipp added, "11 days. Special thanks to the Miller Place Starbucks where we "camped out" for heat, electricity, Internet and coffee. They are wonderful people."

Was very lucky, was out less than 24 hours.

It took a week for Cablevision to get back. The phone wasn't missed, we all have cellphones anyway. I cried to my cell carrier and they gave us a free month of USB tethering. Then, with a wire antenna thrown up on the roof I was able to pull in 8 TV channels over the air. Almost didn't miss CV.

My parents were w/o power for less than a day (about 14 hours). Without cable for 10 days!! Granted it was actually 2 five day periods, but with only 27 hours between the two cable outages.

The electricity was out for 28 hours, nothing to speak of, and cable/phone returned as soon as the power came back on which makes me think we did not lose service for them. During Irene, last year, we lost power for a full week...after a few days, it began to wear me down (esp the freezing cold showers)...but in the scheme of life, not much to complain about storm-wise.

Go with VERIZON ...much better than cable vision .....lost power for 8 days ...had generator running ...never lost VERIZON Fios

Can't recommend FIOS at all - electricity out for 12 days and took another 11 to get FIOS. Called on Sat (morning after I got electricity back) - they said they could send a tech until the following Sunday. Called 3 more time during the week to see if they could come earlier and to verify they were going to fix lines in the street. They said they couldn't move up the appointment but promised i would have service on Sunday. Called Sunday morning to see what time they were coming and was told a tech wouldn't be coming because they needed to send a repair crew for the lines in the street! Found a verizon truck parked in a parking lot on Tuesday - told him my story and he said he would check it out - 2 hours later my wife was texting pictures of the Verizon trucks doing repairs (not sure it was directly due to the guy in the parking lot). That having been said - certainly didn't have it nearly as bad a so many other people still do. Read a lot of books and magazines and had plenty of quality time with the kids!

We were really truly blessed...we lost nothing...the lights barely flickered twice, cable & internet never lost a beat (Optimum) and our cel phones didn't drop signal once (Verizon or Optimum wifi).. TV news & the web watching the storm, the damage, the devastation...and it was as if we were in a cave...unscathed ...

I don't have cable, but my cell phone, home telephone and therefore my Internet was out for 5 days. The good news was that my electric was back on in 30 hours, which means I was one of the first to get it back when usually I am one of the last.

Electric out 11 days , cable, phone , internet out 15 ..But FIOS was out longer ,,, I have already been credited for 15 days .

I was only out for 2 1/2 days, but with a generator I never lost TV: DirecTV. And all of you folks with C-vision remember that you need to call to get credit.
Sam November 29, 2012 at 05:53 PM
We lost power for 12 days and tv/internet/phone for 23 days. We are not complaining since we are much better off than so many others.

No power about 8 days; when we had power Cablevision was up; in fact if I ran our generator and made sure all needed equipment in our house had power, it worked most of the time that we didn't have power from LIPA. Also, when I reported to CV that our connections came via 2 broken poles, they kept in touch with LIPA to try to avoid having LIPA break their connections. One more thing; after Irene Cablevision had gone dead for several days mostly due to lack of power; that didn't happen this time.
